Families in El salvador
By: Ryan Tomberlin
The family in El Salvador is in many ways very similar to the family In the United States. Family is valued and spending time with family outside the house is generally a weekly activity. However, there are some differences. For example, boys are raised to be unemotional and tough and intelligent, but girls are taught more how to look good and how to take care of children one day.
Family Structure
The main family structure in El Salvador is the nuclear family; however, many extended families live near each other, or sometimes with each other. Urban families usually have three kids, but rural families may have six or more.
Child/Parent Relationship
Children are working starting at a young age, or in upper class families, go to school. Children live with their parents until marriage, and if the parents are elderly, they may move in with their kids.
Gender Roles
In the typical El Salvadorian family, the adult male is in charge of doing the main work, but women may either be in charge of cleaning or supervising the cleaning of her house, or she may make little things to sell out of the local market or just out of her house.
