Te Aroha Primary School
Term 3 Week 2 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou
Welcome to week 2
We are very excited to welcome Mrs Aniwa Armstrong to our staff until the end of the year. She will be the release teacher on a Friday in Room 3. Aniwa is a past pupil of our school and it is great to be able to welcome her back as a teacher.
We also welcome Clarissa Hart to our staff this week. Clarissa is an experienced teacher aide and we look forward to having her work with us until the end of the year providing extra support for our students. She will work in various areas of the school.
This past week has been a week of welcomes.
We also welcome Mrs Marina Beilby to our school as our new Social Worker in Schools. She is here to support our students who might be struggling with various things, as well as being able to support our families and whanau.
If you need someone to talk to because your might be struggling to cope with various issues, feel free to contact Marina and she will meet with you. Our SWiS, Marina, can also refer on to other agencies. We are indeed fortunate to have this service for our families based at our school.
Our PTA is organising the annual Duck Day race in September and we ask that all families please support this fundraiser. Please see the poster below for the details.

Classroom Round Ups
A big welcome to Louis who joined Room 1 Today. Our phonics sounds for the week i,n,m and d. Our phonological focus this week is rhyming words and older students are working on blending 3 letter words and saying the word. In Maths we are sorting everyday objects into categories, then creating pictographs, bar graphs and finally making statements about the data. A reminder to please send shorts and a t-shirt to school for cross country running each day, it is very muddy on the field. The children are very excited about the 100 days at school celebration and are counting the days down to Pirate Day on Friday.
Rm 2 Miss Green
We had a wonderful first week back and have all settled back into routines well. We have enjoyed getting to know our new students better too. On Friday we put our fractions learning into practice when we had pizzas and oranges for kai. We now know all about a whole, halves and quarters.
This week we celebrate Cook Island language week. We are encouraged to greet each other by saying kia orana to one another.
Kids are driving their own learning and will brainstorm different animals they want to research and find out more about. We will then begin report writing and will share some of our work with you on Seesaw over the next few weeks.
Reading homework continues and a reminder that bookbags need to be sent back to school everyday with the reader sent home or homework book inside.
Please check your child's hair as we have nits doing the rounds. If your child has nits, they need to be treated ASAP to avoid spreading it to others, and not to return to school until treatment has been done.
On Friday we have Waihou Hub Pirate Day as we are celebrating being at school for 100 days this year.
Rm 3 Miss Swan
Kia ora koutou,
Room 3 had a fantastic start to Term 3 last week and we welcomed the amazing Whaea Armstrong on Friday. We have settled back into routines and we are already working hard on our learning goals. We are so excited for our Celebration day on Friday!
Writing: We are focusing on recrafting and publishing our work to display in class. Our classmates are going to help with editing before we write a final, good copy.
Reading: We are revising the ‘ea’ sound in phonics and the spelling word list coming home this week will reflect this. Reading books will be coming home from Monday through to Thursday.
Maths: We are looking at numbers from 0-100 and recording word problems and thinking about what this looks like as a mathematical equation.
Reminders for the week:
Room 3 is looking forward to 100 days of school Pirate Celebration on Friday. Please read the notice given out last week or contact me if you need more information.
Homework this week includes a small Maths worksheet. A number of children have been asking for Maths homework. This is alongside our usual reading and spelling.
We are going to the Library on Wednesday for this week only due to our Celebration Day.
Whaea Armstrong will be in class on Friday.
Please remember you can pop in and see me, contact me via Seesaw and email mswan@tearohaprimary.school.nz
Have an amazing week!
Rm 5 Miss Entwisle
We are enjoying learning about the Olympics and are proud of how well our New Zealand athletes have been doing. We will continue to train for the upcoming school cross country each day (weather permitting). Our Spelling words this week are all about ap and pl. For those wishing to learn their words at home, a spelling list is available each week on Seesaw, along with a copy of our weekly class poem. In Mathematics we continue to develop our understanding of multiplication and division. If you have any queries or concerns please feel free to get in contact via the Seesaw message function or through email mentwisle@tearohaprimary.school.nz.
Rm 6 Mrs Bankier
In Room 6 this week we will be continuing to learn about persuasive writing. Last week we had to choose if cats or dogs made the best pets, I was really impressed by the reasons Room 6 could give for both animals.
In Maths Whaea Adreena will be continuing her lessons on Probability and I will be working on basic facts recall and addition and subtraction strategies.
We will be learning about New Zealand place names in Te Reo and being able to find different towns and cities on a map of NZ.
Whaea Adreena will continue her topic on the Olympics this week also.
Last week I tested Room 6 on their spelling. This week spelling words will come home as part of their home learning.
Happy Cook Islands week.
Rm 7 Mrs Paul
Last week we had so much fun with the Olympics and we will be carrying this into week 2. our reading activities have us looking at the host city Tokyo and examining things about both the city and its people. It is always interesting to compare and contrast and this is a skill which needs developing.
The children will continue to examine the Olympic values(including the Para Olympic) and look for ways we can show these in our own lives. In writing we continue to use informed decisions to take a stand on things. Last week it was interesting to see how many people changed their opinion after a bit of research.
In Room 7 this term we have a 'On a Positive Note' board. This is to encourage the children to look at the good things that happen instead of focussing on the things that may not be so good. We can change the way we think and feel simply by being glass 'half full' people instead of 'half empty'.So far we have had a really positive reaction to this.
Rm 8 Mrs Young

Rm 9 Mrs Gamble/Mrs Hodgetts.
We have made a great start to the term.

We will learn some Cook Island language through shared stories and songs and explore artworks such as tivaevae and traditional dance.

Financial Literacy: We had some great class discussion around this topic last week. This week Mrs Gamble will open the Real Estate module in Banqer. Our focus will be on how to apply for a mortgage and ensuring we can service the debt. Banqer parent notices went home last week so parents/caregivers can now log on using the provided password and see what their child is achieving in Banqer. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Notices: Can students please bring a change of clothes for cross country and Totara practices.
Homework: Spelling - using the notebooks handed out last term students will record unknown words they use in writing and be bringing these home to practice. As well as sheets teaching spelling rules. Weekly quiz, mathletics tasks and reading 20-30 minutes each evening.
Have a great week everyone.
Rm 10 Mrs Brittenden
Kia ora - this week we get set to celebrate Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week, with some learning activities to help us explore Cook Island Culture. We also continue to follow the New Zealand team at the Olympics - GO FOR GOLD!
Literacy - we will be developing persuasive writing techniques as we debate the issue as to whether the Olympic Games should have gone ahead due to the corona virus. We will need to research this and present findings that support our viewpoint.
Maths - Fractions! We love them! We have been exploring equivalent fractions and this week will be looking at fraction conversions from improper fractions to mixed numerals (there will be some problem solving linked to this)
Cross Country - we will be running further this week. Please send a note if your child is unable to participate. A change of clothes is an excellent idea as the grounds are muddy.
Kaitiakitanga Inquiry - this week, two of our Kaitiaki proposals will be pitched to the Boards of Trustees and Mr Kelly from EnviroSchools. We are really excited about this. Good Luck!
Here is to another super awesome week.
