Tiger Time News
News from the O.C. Taylor Principal, Lisa Young
Young@Heart, Sept. 4, 2016
Welcome to September and the start of football season! We hope you have a relaxing Labor Day weekend.
We will be hosting a digital video of Tiger Times that is a simplified (and faster) version of this printed version: http://www.touchcast.com/octaylorelem/tiger_time_news/?ref=octaylorelem&p=channel . We want you and your child to engage in conversations about O.C. Taylor. Let us know your preferences. The videos will be "fun" and "kid-friendly" in nature. I believe an adult might use the adjectives "hokey" or "cheesy" when describing them. We hope these videos will give you and your child an entertaining and informative way to interact with one another and our school.
As always, my door and email in-box are open. Let me know what we can for your little Tiger!
To the greatest of days,
Principal Young

Rachel's Challenge Kick Off Rally
Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999.Through her example, Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people every year.
Superintendents, principals, teachers, parents, and students bring Rachel’s Challenge into their schools because of escalating problems such as: bullying, student isolation, teen suicide, discrimination, school violence, and increased disciplinary actions. Through powerful presentations, trainings, community events, and professional development,
Rachel’s Challenge provides the sustainable solution. Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day. Rachel’s Challenge renews our hope that our life has meaning and purpose. Rachel’s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassion, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities.

Water Update
An environmental consultant took new water samples at our campus last week. Those samples have been sent to a lab for analysis. I will update you when we receive the reports on those samples.
In the meantime, O.C. Taylor will continue providing bottled water to students and staff until the water fountains can be put back into service.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Curriculum Informational Meetings
At the end of our final meeting, we will send a parent survey to gather input to make the best decision for children, families, parents, and staff for the next school year. We care about each one of you and know we all have different circumstances. We want to come up with a solution that works best, especially for your precious children.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me personally. My door and email in-box are always open.
GCISD Device Agreement Form
GCISD has a new device agreement form that all parents must sign. The fee is only paid one time for all of the years a student is in elementary school. If you have multiple students at OC Taylor, the maximum amount you would be required to pay would be for three students. As a reminder, here are the guidelines for the use agreement and payment:
- All parents and students must sign an updated Student-Parent Device Use Agreement.
- Students that paid their device fee last year of $35 and are still at OC Taylor (or elementary school in GCISD) will need to pay $15 this year to complete the $50 device fee.
- Even if a student is not taking a device home, they still must sign the agreement and pay the $50.
- All kindergarten and new students will need to pay a $50 device fee prior to receiving their iPads or Chrome Books (for 5th grade only).
- Link to all Technology Agreements and Policies: http://www.gcisd-k12.org/Page/766
We also have the Student-Parent Device Use Agreement in the office for students to pick up. Please contact the main office if there are any questions.
