PCMS WEEKLY UPDATE
February 7, 2020
There’s just something about your hometown team winning a Super Bowl that helps you have a wonderful week! I know it will wear off, but it’s sure been fun to have something else to talk with the kids about!
This week’s Tuesday Class Meeting lesson helped students understand the differences between friendships and cliques and allowed students to evaluate their own interaction with friend groups to see if they are being as inclusive as they think they are. We talked about how friendships and cliques can share characteristics, making it hard to see when a friend group has turned into an exclusive clique. Home Connection: Ask your student if their friendship group is a) a clique where it’s exclusive of other people, b) pretty tight but is sometimes open to letting others in, or c) extremely inviting, and everyone is welcome. What could they do to be more inclusive of others?
Third quarter Progress Reports were emailed home today. Hopefully you have had a chance to look these over and discuss them with your child. Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences are right around the corner, as they will be held Wed, Feb 26 from 2-7pm. (This will be a 12:50pm PLC early release day for students.) It looks like a sunny day coming up tomorrow; get out there and enjoy it!
No School Feb 13 & Feb 17
There will be no school in session Fri, Feb 14 due to District In-service and no school Mon, Feb 17 on Presidents Day. Enjoy the long weekend!
Parent Input Needed
The Platte County R-3 School District has been aligning suicide prevention efforts across the district, including student instruction and screening, staff training, and parent information sessions. Through partnership with the Platte County Prevention Coalition and Tri County Mental Health, we're working to increase the number of trusted adults in our District. We'd love to learn more from parents about their interest in this important topic. Please complete this short, three question survey by going to this link: Parent feedback survey. Your feedback will assist us in providing information and training aligned to your interest level and at times that may work for you. If you have questions about these efforts, contact Dr. Jen Beutel at beutelj@platteco.k12.mo.us or 816.858.7001.
Character Warms the Heart Week - February 10-13
February 10-13 is our Pirates ROCK "Character Warms the Heart" week, when we warm up with our good character, have fun spirit week activities, and collect items for our Treasure Chest resource center to help PCR-3 families in need. We're teaming up with Compass Elementary to collect toilet paper & paper towels at PCMS. We also encourage you to celebrate our good character and Pirate Pride by attending the PCHS Pirates home basketball game on February 11 - Pirate fans will receive some Pirates ROCK giveaways!
Pastries with Pirates - 7th Grade - Wed, Feb 12
At PCMS, we have a long-standing tradition of welcoming our extended Pirate families into the building to enjoy breakfast with their middle school students. This year, these breakfasts look a little different than in the past. We will be having three separate Pastries with Pirates breakfasts - one for each grade level.
We hosted our 6th grade families in Sept, and are happy to announce we will be hosting our 7th Grade Pastries with Pirates breakfast on Wed, Feb 12 at 7:00am. 7th-grade students are encouraged to invite special family member(s) to join them in the PCMS cafeteria. (This could be grandparents, mom, dad, aunt, uncle, or any other significant person in the student's life.) We hope to fill the cafeteria for our 7th Grade Pastries with Pirates! See you Feb 12!
3rd Quarter Dodgeball Tournament
Dodgeball is back! STUCO will be hosting another fun-filled tournament on Thurs, Feb 13 from 3-4:30pm. Click here for the Registration Form, where all the details provided!
Middle School Swim Team
We are excited for the upcoming season of the Middle School Swim Team for 7th and 8th grade boys and girls!

Don’t forget to order your yearbook!
We are noticing that there are a lot of students who have not yet ordered their 2019-20 PCMS Yearbook. Our yearbooks are always such a fun way for students to remember their middle school fun, friends, teachers, etc. Don’t miss out...the deadline will be here before you know it!
Standard Yearbook Price (Soft Cover) = $20
Upgraded Hard Cover Yearbook Price = $25
The deadline to order is March 23.
You may order either by sending your order form* and money to school with your child OR online at https://ybpay.lifetouch.com/Order/SelectJob. Use the Yearbook ID Code: 5014520.
*If you need an extra form, they are available in the office.
Note from the Nurse
If your student is now over the age of 11, they can receive their Meningococcal (MCV) vaccine and their Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, both of which are required for his/her 8th-grade year per Missouri State Law.
We are trying to get as many done as possible before the end of the 2019-20 school year so that registration for the next school year will be a bit smoother for everyone. Your child may have already had this done, but we need to have the updated documentation in their school health record. Please check with your child's doctor to see if he/she needs to complete these vaccines. If they have already received these immunizations, please provide written proof to us as soon as possible. Keep in mind; if your student does not have this immunization by their registration day in August, they will not be able to get their schedule nor start on the first day of school.
Last-minute immunization checks can make your wait at registration time much longer than necessary, as well as cause undue stress on you and your child. If you have any questions, please call Nurse Tammy
Kobush at 816.858.2036 Ext 2613.
Updated immunization records may be brought to the Health Room at school, faxed to 816.858.3748 or emailed to kobusht@platteco.k12.mo.us.
