Spelling
We will begin our weekly spelling tests next week. I will send the new list home on Fridays. This will allow you plenty of time to practice and review the words at home. Your child will have a list of ten words to spell. The words are taken from our Saxon Phonics lessons (CVC words) and our sight word lists. The students should be able to use the phonics skills they have learned, as well as sound out the words to write them correctly. Students will also be asked to write a sentence using correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Student's will take their spelling test on Friday mornings. Your child’s spelling tests will be part of their reading grade.
Please use the lists to practice at home with your child. Another fun way to study their spelling words is Spelling City. We will be using this program at school, but you can also use it at home! Just go to: http://www.spellingcity.com/blongjes/
Once you get to the page, it will look like the picture below. You can click on “games” next to the list for the week. (For example, next week you would click next to List 1.) Make sure the words match the list that I send home!
Changes for the new semester:
We are making a few changes for the new semester. Since we will be focusing on writing and spelling new words, I will be sending home a new option for homework. Each Monday, I will send home a Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe sheet. Students will pick three spelling activities in a row to complete. They will return the sheet along with the completed work on Friday for a treat. This will help students prepare for the spelling test that they will be taking on Friday. *(This homework is optional. It will be a great way to help reinforce the spelling of words!)
What if we get snow, ice, subzero temps, or any combo of these delightful things? As we move into January and the coldest winter months, it is important for parents and students to know how school decisions are made and how 'winter works' at Scott 2!
The difficult job in deciding whether or not to change the school schedule is left to our school superintendent. Dr. Marc Slaton will follow weather forecasts from multiple sources, communicate with local law enforcement, and even personally drive district roads prior to making a decision about delaying or cancelling school. Sometimes a change is announced at night. Sometimes not until morning. Sometimes the plan changes overnight.
The most important thing to know is that the decision is ALWAYS made in the best interest of safety for school buses, students that walk to school, students that drive to school, parents that drive their kids to school, and staff members that drive to work.
When school changes are made, SchoolMessenger calls will be sent to all parent phone numbers. Parents and students can also find out about school changes on our web site, on local radio or TV, and on district Facebook sites. Please make sure your contact information is up to date in Harmony so that you are receiving the SchoolMessenger call.
If we have a 2 hour delay, schools will start at 9:45 AM. Bus routes will run two hours late but riders should be patient as winter roads often slow travel. JES will still open at 7:30 AM for parents that need to drop off students on the way to work. The YMCA Before School Program will not be in session. JES will serve breakfast at 9:30 AM. All classes will meet but on a shortened basis. Sport and club activities will be held. There will be no AM Preschool.
If we cancel school, JES will be closed. No sport or club activities will be held on days that we cancel school. All cancelled days will be made up!
Also, please send your child dressed appropriately for cold weather!
