Instructional and Engagement Strategies
Name Tent Toss Activity
- a drawing of what they did over winter break
- write a word or two that best describes them
- draw their favorite hobby or activity
- write a favorite movie or music group
After students are done, have them get in groups of three. You can play music for this activity. As soon as the music begins they need to get into a group of three. Stop the music and have them share what they have drawn/written in two of the corners. After about 2 minutes start the music again and have them regroup with different people. Share what is in the other corners. Now split the class into two circles. Have each group toss their name tents into the center of their circle. Have two volunteers try to match the names with the correct people in the shortest amount of time. Group members can help.
Big Paper Activity
In a Big Paper activity, students respond silently to a text excerpt or image by writing their comments on a shared paper. A large white sheet of paper with handwritten student comments annotating a text.
