From Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha
As we bid April adieu and head into May, we wanted to give a massive "shout out" to our 3rd-6th Grade students for the focus, attention, engagement, and tenacity they put on display this past week during the PSSA testing. We have all taken standardized tests, and I think we would all agree that they can be stressful. While we try to minimize any stress surrounding PSSA for our students, we also recognize that some of our students feel it. Well, you would hardly know that based on what we observed during our first week of PSSA. The time and care our students took in their approach to the tests was admirable, and it impressed the adults here a great deal!
We would like to think that the work we do to plan lessons and provide high-quality instruction to our students through commitment and dedication to them as learners is something we are modeling to our students. But we were pretty impressed with their level of commitment and dedication through some challenging testing, so they certainly played the part of role models for us this past week!
Mill Creek 3rd-6th Grade students... thank you for the focus, attention, engagement, and tenacity you put on display during week 1 of PSSA testing (we are more than halfway done - yay!) and for bringing those traits in your approach to learning every day!
Have a great weekend!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE about Personal Electronic Devices...
Teachers have noticed an increase in the amount of electronic devices, especially smart watches, being brought to school by students. In some cases, student personal electronic devices are becoming obtrusive to instruction, especially if alerts are set to go off throughout the school day. Considering this, we would ask the following:
- Please consider having your child keep their personal electronic devices at home.
- If you feel your child must bring their personal electronic device to school, please have them put it on a setting that blocks alerts during the school day. For instance, the newer versions of Apple Smart Watches have a Schooltime feature that allows parents to limit the watch’s functionality during the school day (some older versions, however, do not have this feature).
- Another option is to have your child keep their personal electronic device silenced and in a secure part of their bookbag during the school day.
Additionally, we cannot ensure that a student’s personal electronic device will not go lost or missing when it is brought to school.
Thank you for your understanding regarding and attention to this matter.

Instructional Spotlight - Mr. Courtney, 4th Grade
4th Grade Teacher, Mr. Courtney is one of Mill Creek's most creative and energetic. That creativity and energy were on full display from both Mr. Courtney and his students this week as they engaged in what Mr. Courtney dubbed, a "Courtney Classroom Classic," - Trashketball. In efforts to review for Chapter 7, Angles, his students participated in a review game to practice naming angles, measuring, and drawing angles using a protractor. Following each practice problem, each student would be able to decide how far they would shoot from the trash can, which also determined how many points the basket was worth! Students were practicing math and angles and engaging in peer support and sportsmanship as well!
