Math, Science, and Social Studies
In fluency this week we will continue focusing on the 8 facts. Students have fact cards in their binder to practice at home this week. Please make sure your child practices these facts for 10-15 minutes a night. We will have an accuracy check this week. We have been practicing the 8 facts for 2 weeks. This fact family has proven to be one of the most difficult for students to learn fluently. We will practice these facts in class daily and take the accuracy check on Friday.
NCTM Conference-I had a great time and learned so much at the NCTM conference! I was able to attend many sessions and brought back many great ideas and games that will help students with a variety of different skills. I am so excited! Students will learn 3 new games this week that will focus on mental math, making sums of 15, probability, and math strategy. I will continue to add new games into our lessons each week.
Social Studies-We have begun our Social Studies unit "The Story of Our Government". Students were able to watch several videos and study the Declaration of Independence before our fall break. This week we will focus on the Boston Tea Party and discuss the historical perspectives of George Washington vs. King George. On Friday, students will perform an "American Revolution" reader's theater.
Reading, Writing, Vocab and Word Study
Reading--We will begin a new class novel this week, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. We will work on summarizing, characterizations, and theme. We will also continue finding text based evidence and reading several short stories related to the holiday season.
Writing--We will be working on designing a new suit for Santa and writing to explain why he should select our suits.
