New Fencing Coach joins OSS: Starts March 3rd at the Lynx Gym
We are pleased to introduce our new fencing coach Jenny Seachrist, she is the owner of Orlando Fencing Club and Winter Garden fencing academy, she has been fencing for over 20 years, and is certified by safe sport, USFA, and is an OCPS vendor with full credentials.
Our first fencing club day will be March 3rd at 3:30 pm in the Lynx Gym. Students can start getting ready at that time so they are prepared for practice. Please be sure to send your students with full length athletic pants, shoes, and a t shirt. Water bottles are recommended. Pick up time is at 5:30 pm through the aftercare area, you will not be charged for aftercare those days as long as you pick up your student before 6:00 pm.
At our first meeting all forms will be due. These forms are just like our aftercare forms and will require the payments be set up with confirmation of credit card and photo ID. The club is $50 a month and your last payment will come out on the 1st of May. Any gear you would like to purchase will be paid ahead. I will be at the first meeting and will assist you with your orders, paperwork and payments.
Grades and Attendance: We take education seriously as you all know, students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher to participate in this club, we want to make sure that your student can balance school and club but their education is #1. We also take attendance seriously, if your student is absent from school due to illness, please do not bring them to club. We want everyone to stay health and recover well if they are already sick. In order to participate in club your student must be counted as present at school that day as well.
Gear: We have two packages available. The student is required to purchase their personal items such as socks, shoes, chest plates(girls), Plasteron, and a glove. The total for this package with the school is $110 and will include the OSS gym bag. Shoes are not included because you can choose any athletic shoe you want. They do not need to be fencing specific. Our full package includes Mask, uniform, weapon, practice foil, and Bag. The chest protector and socks can be added on.
The school will provide a practice uniform that will be fitted to your student but will also be left at school in our fencing cabinet, these will all be numbered and your student will be assigned a number. The school will also be purchasing weapons for practice. Once we get to a point where the students are competing we will provide competing weapons as well. You will be responsible for the uniform for competitions but this is down the line. These uniforms will only be worn at competitions so they stay fresh and looking nice.
Parent assistance: We will be asking our fencing parents to help out from time to time with providing water, snacks, and an extra hand with events. All parents are welcome to come to practices and watch their students, and maybe even learn themselves!
Safe Sport: Please take a moment to look at these links, these are very helpful and the students are required to take them.

Black History Month Gallery
To honor the African American Community and their struggle for equality in the United States, OSHS students have created a Black History Month gallery. Students worked in groups to create fantastic displays that highlight instrumental people, events, and movements in African American History. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about specific moments and people that helped shape American history in the Abolitionist Movement, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the modern day. Our students really did an outstanding job this year!

30/30 Dismissal Rule
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
