You'll see on the new homework calendar that math practice will change a little. Instead of just skip-counting, I'd like students to practice writing a certain set of multiplication facts each week. They can use the same sheet of paper each night, just list them in a different section.
Have your child write them in this way.
1. Write the first factor (which will be the same for each fact). 2 x
2. Write the second factor that will change. 2 x 1 =
3. Write the product (answer) for the fact. 2 x 1 = 2
4. Repeat the process for each fact up to the 12th count. 2 x 2= 4...... 2 x 12 = 24
We will give our first NC Check-Ins this week. They are like a practice EOG provided by the state. On Monday and Tuesday, we will take some time to do tutorials to get familiar with the program, and Wednesday and Thursday mornings will be our test days. To help your child prepare, talk with them about doing his/her very best to answer the questions correctly, especially working out math problems on their blank paper. They'll need to eat a good supper, sleep well, and arrive to school with plenty of time to transition to the room and eat breakfast. These tests help me see where I need to adjust my teaching to help with solidifying skills before the end of the year. It also helps students become famliar with the format of the online assessment. Thank you for keeping discussions about the Check Ins positive and encouraging!
If you opted to send in $10 payments for field trips, the November payment is due this Friday.
Please reach out with any questions, and have a safe Halloween!
Monday- Halloween! Students may wear costumes, just no props or face coverings.
Tuesday- Normal Day
Wednesday- Reading Check-In #1
Thurday- Math Check-In #1
Friday- Field trip payments are due for November.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's for homework again?
Each week, students will read 20 minutes each night and have a parent signature on the calendar. Your child may bring a book from my library home to read, but please make sure it comes back!
Expect your child to have reading each night, a math fluency activity to complete, and a spelling assignment (some are oral and some are written). Homework should take about 30-40 minutes total, so if it lasts longer than that, please let me know!
How can I help my child at home?
Math: This will change depending on the skills we're working on in class. However, knowing addition/ subtraction facts to 20 help get the year started on the right foot. Also, complete the skip counting each work for homework.
Spelling: Did you know spelling is actually harder to master than reading? It takes lots of brain power to know the letters, sound and spelling pattern in different combinations, and then get them from your brain to the paper. Practice patience, then remind them of the pattern we're working on for the week (posted on the homework calendar). You may give other words (even words that aren't real) for more practice with the same pattern.
What snacks are ok for my child to bring?
Remember, we are allowed to buy ice cream at lunch on Fridays for $1.25!
If you'd like to send in "emergency snacks", small individually wrapped packs of crackers, pretzels, or cereal bars would be perfect for placing in my basket for students who forgot to bring an item from home. You're welcomed to send in snack donations with your child or order through Amazon and have it shipped straight to the school. Easy peasy, right?!
What will my child miss if he/she needs to leave for part of the day?
How can I donate/ volunteer in my child's classroom?
You may donate items for classroom snacks or from my Amazon and Teachers Pay Teachers fund. Stay tuned for the links!
