Level 1:Reading between the lines

Stargirl was different from the other kids in school, and different from how anyone in the town acts.

Stargirl is different because she leaves candy pumpkins on everyone desk in halloween. She is also different because she sings happy birthday to them with a ukellele, and because she cheers for both teams at basketball games.

As Leo thought about Stargirl "At the same time, we held back. Because she was different. Different. We had no one to compare her to, no one to measure her against. She was unknown territory. Unsafe. We were afraid to get to close."

This excerpt shows how the town and even Leo, are wary of accepting Stargirls behavior.

Even though it seems harmless to sing happy birhtday, or cheer for everyone, it tuns out this can have consequeneces. Cheering for the other team upsets the people who are cheering for your team, and signing everyone happy birhtday can upset some people who don't like that done to them.

But in the end the town started a tradition of cheering the other teams first basket, so even if they never fully accepted Stargirl they did change slightly because of her.
