Reading Resources and Reading Incentive Programs
Did you know that when a student does not read during summer vacation, he/she could possibly decline almost three reading levels? Teachers often refer to this loss of learned skills as the "summer-slide". Help your student stay motivated with these reading resources and reading incentive programs!
Make reading a family priority!
- Participate in a "Family Summer Book Club"! The whole family reads a book together and spends time discussing and engaging in book-talks.
- Read and research about your vacation destination with non-fiction text.
- Read a children's book that was made into a movie.
- Reward your student with praise, and/or with small personal incentives.
- Use assisted technology such as FaceTime, Skype, or other means to have your students read to a friend or family member who may live far away.
- Older students can have read-aloud time with younger students. This practice builds reading fluency, stamina, and confidence for the older student, and helps younger students build-up vocabulary, strengthen important listening skills, and models effective reading strategies .
- Visit the public library or local book stores together, and take a break from video games. Having book discussions helps create strong family bonds, and develops improved communication skills.
- Parents/Guardians, don't forget to model your love of reading! Students learn by example. Unplug and snuggle-up with your child and a good book!

Lower Grade Reading Tips
- Read aloud to your young student
- Read one page, have your student read a page and repeat until the book is finished. Read the book again and switch turns!
- Create your own books together!
- Practice letter sounds, make it into a game while you're traveling together or when you have some free time
- Rhymes are fun and help build phonological awareness. Nursery rhymes, Dr. Seuss books, and learning songs are excellent ways to make learning fun!
- Have your child practice letter formation, and letter identification by writing in the sand, the dirt, shaving cream, and/or cutting out letters/words from magazines. Be sure to read road signs out loud while driving around town too!
- Be creative! Make reading fun, not a chore.
Upper Grade Reading Tips
- 20 minute daily independent reading is recommended
- Finding high-interest books is key!
- Ask your student questions about the characters, the plot, the conclusion, and what part of the book was his/her favorite.
- Was the book made into a movie? Pop some popcorn and watch the movie together when your student finishes the book. Compare and contrast the book to the movie!
- Don't forget to watch the movies with the captions on.
