Dear Parents,
Our lesson for this week was “Learning about Rocks and Minerals.” Your child was learning about many different kinds of rocks and the role they play in the Earth’s history. They talked about how rocks were used in the past and are still used today.
Your child observed and talked about a variety of rocks/minerals and discovered how they are the same or different.
During our small group called "Asking Questions" students had an interesting conversation about what they already know about rocks and what they want to learn. During our circle time, they also discussed about the kinds of rocks found in caves and how they are different from surface rocks. The movie called CROODS was really helpful.
Next week, we will talk about fossils and how they are formed.
Here are some activities we have planned:
Art Center: Creating a story about their Pet Rock
Dramatic Play Center: Role-play with props, such as gloves, maps, safety helmets, safety glasses, and magnifying glasses, in order to pretend we are geologists.
Block Center: Make caves using stuffed paper grocery bags.
Math Center: Sort rocks by size, and then count them and put them into sets of 10; sequence a set of rocks by size, from largest to smallest; use nonstandard units (such as marbles or unit blocks) to weigh and compare rocks.
Music Center: Discover ways to use rocks as musical instruments.
Literacy Center: Write and draw in shallow trays covered with sand; and talk about how sand is made up of crushed rocks and shells.
Sand and Water Center: scrub and wash rocks to discover how they change when wet and/or clean.
Discovery Science Center: Does it sink or Float? experiment
students will have the opportunity to use what they know about rocks to determine whether each will sink or float in water.Outdoor Activity Center: Talk about insects that live under rocks and carefully look for some on the playground; participate in games using rocks, such as building with them in the sand, racing while balancing a rock on a body part, and target practice with small pebbles; and work together to make a huge rock garden.
We are very excited about the activities we have planned. As always, thank you for sharing your child's pictures with us.

At home
At home you can:
- Look for interesting rocks near your home.
- Let your child bring some interesting rocks to school.
- Look for stone statues, sculptures, and buildings as you drive.
- If possible, visit a store that sells outdoor equipment to look at the materials used for spelunking (exploring caves).

FIELD TRIP NEWS
Contrary to what the letter sent out today said about the field trip, permission slips must be in by Wednesday, February 8th (next Wednesday). MEDUCA has asked for all the information on our field trip and they need to know which students have parental permission to attend. If your child’s permission slip is not sent in by Wednesday February 8th, he/she will not be able to attend the field trip.
An up to date copy of the letter is attached to this email.
Please let me know if you would like to be a parent volunteer/chaperone for this field trip and let me know if you have any questions. Mrs. Maqui will go with us.

PK Field Trip Announcement
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we wrap up our unit on rocks, we want to celebrate their learning and accomplishments with something special. We will be visiting “Mi Pueblito” to learn about rocks, different building materials and how they are made from the Earth’s resources. We will also review math, art, and other science concepts during this time.
For this field trip, we will be leaving school on Thursday February 16th at 8:30 am and coming back at 2:00 pm. We will be using the school buses as a means of transportation to and from “Mi Pueblito”. If you wish to be a chaperone for this trip, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher. Only 2 of the parent chaperones can ride the bus with us to “Mi Pueblito”, other parents that wish to come must find their own transportation. Student fees will be taken care of by the school, but any parents/chaperones that wish to attend must pay their entrance fee (Panamanians $1, Foreigners $3).
On the day of the field trip, students should come to school wearing jeans and their PE shirt. Students should also be wearing sun screen, and bring a cap to protect them from the sun. Each student should also bring a lunch box with a water bottle, snack, and cold lunch. On this day, using disposable bags for a lunch box is preferable for things not to get lost.
If you would like for your child to participate in this field trip, please sign the attached permission slip and send it to school no later than Wednesday February 8th 2017.
Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
