Principal's Message
November is Stress Awareness Month
Happy November from Dr. Maria Reardon (school psychologist and Special education coordinator) and the Special Education team at Johnson Elementary School! November is Stress Awareness month and the timing could not be better here at Johnson! Our Jaguars have finished the first unit (Self-Awareness) in our new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Everyday Speech. We are now moving on to the Self-Management unit. As part of the first unit, Jaguars increased their awareness about who they are, their feelings and background. They will now begin to learn about how to react and manage their feelings, take ownership of their behaviors and choices and set goals for themselves.
Stress is part of our human experience and some stress is important and actually adaptive. We need some stress to spark action and motivate us. However, when stress becomes too intense or lasts too long, it requires that we use strategies to manage it. Stress management strategies will be a part of our students learning this unit.
Mindfulness, for example, is a great way to manage stress. Take a look at this Mindfulness video to learn more. Developing self-care tools and strategies will help our students well into adulthood. Here are a few resources/activities that you can use at home with your children.
If you’re interested in more information about children and stress, this link includes helpful information and this article from the Mayo Clinic provides some ideas to effectively address childhood stress at school and at home.
Also, feel free to reach out to us at Johnson for more information about the Everyday Speech curriculum.
Best regards,
John
First Grade Word Detective Unit!
Thank you to school Resource Officer Keven Kelley for coming to Johnson to launch our word detective unit. It's very exciting when our reading missions come from the police department.
