HTHS Cheer Recap from Orlando

Our Hewitt-Trussville High School Competition Cheerleaders traveled to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at The Walt Disney World to compete at the 2022 National High School Cheerleading Championship which took place February 11-13. The NHSCC is produced by Universal Cheerleaders Association, and is the "pinnacle of cheerleading competitions for high school cheerleaders across the country". All teams invited to attend the NHSCC must qualify at a regional competition in the fall of 2021.

Over the course of three days, HTHS Competition Cheerleaders competed four times. Their last performance was Sunday, Feb 13th at finals. They performed a flawless routine and landed 5th in the nation! There was a 0.6 difference between the first and the fifth placed teams.

Head Coach Amy Gay said, "I am so proud of our HTHS Competition Cheer Team. They had solid performances throughout the three days of competition. They represented our school and community very well."

"These female athletes work extremely hard to prepare for this competition. They have been practicing four to five days together since this summer, and most of the girls continue to work strength and skills outside of their regularly scheduled team practices. This past weekend they showed an enormous amount of mental and physical strength. Teams must score in the top half of each round to advance to the next round of competition. They perform the routine one time each round. So, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on the girls to stay focused and hit a solid routine. We prepare for months not just physically, but also mentally by teaching the girls to "tune out" everything around them, to have "mat talk" where they are constantly encouraging each other on the floor, and to take the routine step by step and recover if anything goes wrong. I believe these are lessons that they will continue to use for the rest of their lives."

"I have been coaching high school cheerleaders for sixteen years, and this is one of the most solid teams that I have ever coached. Yes, they have strong skills, but most importantly they know how to work hard together. It doesn't take being around them for very long to realize they are leaders and encouragers. They are perfectly balanced. They know how to be serious and focused at practice, and they know how to laugh and have a good time. I am so proud of this team. And although I am not ready for this season to end, I cannot think of a better way to end it than to hit a solid routine at finals and be top five in the nation!"
