Principal's Message
Greetings Bobcat Families!
It has been a lovely week in Bobcat Country. Our students worked hard to showcase their learning during STAR Winter testing. If your student was absent, make-up testing will be administered. We finished off the week with our Advocacy Day families and reviewing our commitment to the Pillars of Leadership. What a lovely way to kick off 2023! Reminder, there is no school for staff or students on Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Have a wonderful long weekend!

A Message from the YMCA
Happy New Year from the YMCA! It is my hope that you had a restful break. I am reaching out because available staffing is looking promising for the spring! As a result, we have space to expand our YMCA after-school programs. There are a number of spots available at A.C. Moore and we would like to extend to you an opportunity to enroll your student in the YMCA after-school program. Click the logo to the right to read detailed information about how you can sign-up your student or click here to visit the website.

Parents of CRP Students
After-School CRP classes will not be held next week (January 16-20). Students should go home their normal way at the end of the school day (2:30). Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 24th.
Attention Kindergarten Parents
Kindergarten students brought home their Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Score Reports prior to the Winter Break. Families can review the report and learn what their child already knows and can demonstrate. The report also includes ideas to support your child's language and literacy growth, along with their math and social skills.

As many across the nation prepare to honor the legacy of civil rights leader, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it is important to remember the MLK Day Observance is more than a day off, but a day on. The third Monday in January is not only designated to remember Dr. King's contribution and dedication to civil rights, but it is also a day for citizens to volunteer and give back to the communities and causes that matter to them. The MLK holiday is the only federal holiday that calls for a day of service.
To commemorate and celebrate the life of Dr. King, take the opportunity to learn more about The King Center's theme for this years observance, 'Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems'. The Beloved Community is a philosophy popularized by Dr. King in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. He envisioned a society where “caring and compassion drive political policies that support the worldwide elimination of poverty and hunger and all forms of bigotry and violence. At its core, the Beloved Community is an engine of reconciliation.” You can download the full calendar of 2023 King Holiday Observance events here.
Want to know how you and your student can work toward the goal of creating the Beloved Community? Check out these resources and ideas.
Learn about King and the Civil Rights Movement
- In addition to King, learn about other figures who have worked to expand voting rights, such as Ida B. Wells, John Lewis and Fannie Lou Hamer.
- Talk with someone in your community who was alive during the Civil Rights era and have them provide a first-hand account of their experiences.
- Stock your bookshelves with books about King.
- Analyze a lesser-known speech, sermon, or letter by and about King. Search the Online King Records Access Database archive.
- Experience King's dynamic and powerful presence as an orator. Watch his speeches.
- Take a virtual tour of the National Civil Rights Museum.
Community-Based Service
- Explore the Idealist website for volunteer tasks, COVID-19 efforts, and other locally-based volunteer opportunities.
- Search MLKDay.gov. Spearheaded by AmeriCorps, the site allows you to search MLK Day virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities in your community and explore numerous other resources.
- Find ways to support the National Civil Rights Museum or get involved with your local historical society.
- Hold a coat drive in your area via One Warm Coat.
- Search by ZIP code to explore volunteer opportunities with the American Red Cross.
- Write a letter or send a card to deployed service members through Soldiers' Angels.
What You Can Do Nationally
- Use Catchafire to access flexible, virtual volunteer opportunities that exercise your skill sets and support causes you hold dear.
- Volunteer to transcribe historical documents through the Smithsonian Digital Volunteer program.
- The Library of Congress also has a transcription program with By the People. Founded in 2018, By the People is a volunteer initiative to improve search, readability, and access to handwritten and typed documents for everyone, including people who are not fully sighted.
- Help seniors feel less lonely. Letters Against Isolation serves thousands of seniors in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia, and Israel.
- Volunteer to answer questions from students who want to work in your field when they grow up. CareerVillage.org's mission is to democratize career readiness by giving professionals a platform to give career information and advice to underrepresented youth.
- Sign up to be a virtual tutor with UPchieve. The free, online platform connects low-income students in the U.S. with live, volunteer coaches.

Need to Report an Absence for your Student? Click Below
Assignments for COVID Related Absences
For the 22-23 school year, students that are absent due to illness will receive any missed and/or make-up assignments upon return to school. They will have 5 days to return the completed work to their teacher. This is in accordance with AC Moore's typical absence policy. Devices and extended absence assignments will not be sent home this year. Virtual check-in sessions with students will also not occur. Those practices and procedures were in place as a result of Richland One's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bobcat Families--Please note that the neighbors directly across from the front of the school are having difficulties getting their trash picked up when vehicles are parked in front of their homes and along the edge of their yard. Your courtesy and consideration would be greatly appreciated in addressing their concerns. When visiting the school, please park in the visitors parking area at the corner of Etiwan Avenue and Rosewood Drive and along the street in designated parking spaces.
Important Carline Pick-up and Drop-off Reminders
In an effort to keep the carline safe for students and staff, it is requested that the following carline procedures be followed during the morning and afternoon carline.
- Please pull as far forward to the end of the carline (towards Rosewood Dr.) before stopping your vehicle to allow your student to enter/exit through the gate; do not stop at the main entrance to let students out of or into the car.
- Students are to get out on the passenger side of the carline only, not from the driver side, side facing the road.
- Parents should remain in the car and allow school staff to assist the students into or out of cars.
