Mr. T's (Almost) Weekly Newsletter

For ELA, SS, and GMS Updates

Welcome To The Newsletter!

Sorry this has been so delayed coming to you this year, but starting now we are trying to work on better communicating with our parents. Each week (or close to) I will send out an update of what is going on in the classroom as well as upcoming events and deadlines. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at

English / Language Arts Update

What Have We Been Doing?

For the past month we have been reading fictional texts and looking at their relationship to nonfictional text. We read "In the Fog" and "The Hitchhiker". We also looked at non-print media by listen to the original Orson Welles performance of "The Hitchhiker".

As of recent, we have been researching and writing 5-paragraph essays about a specific topic. The topics of choice included: The Brooklyn Bridge, Abraham Lincoln, The Battle of Gettysburg, The Gettysburg Address, The History of Radio, and Orson Welles. All these topics tie back into one of the stories we have read.

The due date for a final typed copy is December 5th.

What Will We Be Doing?

Starting next week, we will be reviewing our benchmark test to find our errors and learn from our mistakes. This will happen during ELA block next week and will be revisited periodically throughout the year so that we are prepared for our EOG tests at the end of the year.

Along with reviewing benchmarks, we will beginning a mini-unit that works with skills from up until this point in the year. Students will be working in Centers, with partners, independently, to complete tasks both on the tablet and on paper. Stay tuned for more information!

Social Studies Update

What Have We Been Doing?

We just completed our unit on Ancient Egypt and tested on 11/25. Grades were reported to students and completed tests will be sent home in Tuesday Folders. During this unit we learned about Egyptian Inventions, Pharaohs, mummies, and other topics that helped mold current society. Students also researched different topics and created "Paper-Slide" Videos using their tablets.

What We Will Be Doing?

We are about to move onto our next unit which focuses on Ancient Africa and how it has molded and influenced current day society. We are also going to be looking at the different religions of the world and the role these religions have played in social structures and conflicts. I letter will be going home in the upcoming weeks better explaining this unit. If you feel your child should not participate in this unit for any reason, please complete the form and return it to school. If you have any questions, please email me.
