Wrightstown Ravens' News
February 18, 2022
We had such a fun week celebrating the 100th Day of School, Valentine's Day parties, and cheering on the Geography Bee participants! A special thanks go out to all of the parents who helped facilitate the Valentine's Day parties for students on Monday. On behalf of the WES Staff, we thank all of our families for the chocolate-covered sweets on Valentine's Day. We appreciate your kindness! I hope that your plans for the long weekend include something enjoyable and relaxing. This is a reminder that there is no school on Monday, February 21st. When the students left school yesterday they definitely looked excited for the long weekend.

Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month there are a variety of materials that are used in the Library to celebrate Black History Month.
During Black History Month some students will be introduced to Tall Tales to learn how historical information is exaggerated to tame the open lands of early America. The PA Young Readers Choice books showcasing Carter Reads the Newspaper and Freedom Soup will be shared with selected classes. Different classes and grade levels will be utilizing a variety of CR purchased databases such as PebbleGo, PebbleGO Next, Bookflix, and GOGrolier among others to access biographies and story pairs to celebrate Black History Month.
The links below are a digital selection of books that celebrate Black History Month read by actors and actresses. Be sure to check them out!

Enhanced Lockdown Drill
We are all committed to the safety of all the students in Council Rock and Wrightstown Elementary School. We continually work with local police to learn and implement best practices in school safety and security. Council Rock has adopted a set of federally endorsed protocols for an intruder on campus situation, known as ALICE. The acronym stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. All Council Rock staff and administrators have been trained in the ALICE protocols. One difference between our past "traditional lockdown" and "enhanced lockdown" is our classroom doors will be barricaded. This will look different depending on the grade level and the age of the children.
We are conducting another Enhanced Lockdown Drill next Friday morning, February 25th. This enhanced lockdown drill will be no different than drills conducted in the past. Specifically, we will use the all call intercom to signal the drill. All students will lockdown in their classrooms with their classroom teacher. Also, Newtown Township Police and/or CRSD Security personnel may be on site.
It’s always a good idea to review this information with your children prior to the drill. The social story in the link below is a resource parents can use to help children understand how we are approaching our added safety measures. The social story helps put these procedures in "kid friendly" terms. And the teachers share and review it with students.
If you should report to the school during the facilitation of the drill, you will not be able to enter the building. A sign will be posted on the outside door to communicate this. Most drills are fairly brief. We thank you, in advance, for your patience and understanding during this time.

Recyclables Needed to STEM Design Challenge!
WES is proud to support 11 teams, in grades 4-6, in the 2022 Bucks County Intermediate Unit “STEM Design Challenge”. Students in 4th grade will be using recyclable materials to construct their prototypes. This is where we need YOU! We are in need of recyclables! We will take just about anything recyclable that students can use to build. We cannot accept anything that is sharp or of glass.
Bins are located near the rear/side (Gym) entrance for this collection. We have a limited window of opportunity so anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated!

Human Growth & Development Classes (Grades 4, 5 & 6)
As part of the yearly health curriculum fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students receive instruction on human growth and development during the second semester of the 2021-2022 school year. Classes will be taught by the Physical Education teacher and the school nurse. We understand that these can be difficult conversations to have with your students, but they are of great importance to our children’s health. Additional resources for parents are provided in the letter (at the following LINK), as well as the grade level topics if you are looking to further these conversations at home.
Recess Outdoors!
It's cold outside! Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for outside weather. Warm jackets, hats, sturdy shoes, pants, and gloves are essential for the children to safely enjoy their recess. Unless the weather is extreme (rain or excessive cold – 22 degrees or below), children will have recess outside. Please send your child in with appropriate clothing daily so they are prepared.

A student receiving a free meal must choose at least 3 items for the lunch to be considered complete as per the Department of Child Nutrition regulations, one of which must be at least a half-cup serving of a fruit or vegetable. Anything less than this will be considered an a la carte purchase and must be paid for by the student.
