7th Grade Newsletter - Barry School
January 14th, 2022
A few reminders:
7th Grade will be sending home a newsletter every other Friday. Our next newsletter will be sent out on January 28th.
- 2nd Quarter grades were sent home today
- In effect immediately: Students' date on submitting late work for weekly incentive has changed to Monday at 3 pm. This is so teachers have more time to create an accurate list that reflects which students need to complete missing assignments for our Incentive Day on Wednesdays.
- The last day to submit missing work for the first half of 3rd Quarter is January 28th (2 weeks away), so make sure you are planning ahead. (Academic Lab is a great resource -the sign up form can be found at the bottom of the newsletter)
- You can check missing work through Student/Parent Portal or having your student show you missing work under the To-Do list on Google Classroom.
Late Work:
Late work is accepted through Progress Reports (9/17, 11/23, 1/28 ,4/15) or through End of Quarter Reports (10/22, 12/22, 3/11, 5/25)
When you submit late work you will be charged 1 Live School Point
At the end of the quarter, students will be charged 2 Live School points per each missing assignment

Core Class Information
Ms. Allen - 7th Grade Math
We are starting Unit 2. Our focus is to analyze and use proportional relationships. We will be working on Unit 2 for the next several weeks.
Mr. Ruiz - ELA
Students have been working on using Pathos and Ethos to make an argument. They have also taken two mini-quizzes on them, and can retake them any day of the week as long as they have turned in this quarter’s classwork and homework.
Mr. Seymour - Social Studies
We are exploring the social structure and achievements of Egyptian society. We will continue working on our grapes chart as well as creating a graphic organizer that shows the rank and responsibilities of different levels of Egyptian society. We will be having a comprehension quiz on the geography of Egypt, social classes, and architecture on Friday, January 21st. Study materials will be available on Friday, January 14th.
Mrs. Sullinger - Science
We are starting our unit of Energy. Students have been working on and exploring the definition of work. Students were also able to read articles that explained the science of why washing your hands for 20 seconds is important. They found that it connects with a lot of vocabulary words we have been using this year. How cool is that??
Students made a claim, found evidence from the articles, and then explained their rationale on why they chose that piece of evidence. After students completed their responses, they then conferenced with a peer before submitting to be graded (picture below).
Students will have a quiz over work on Tuesday, January 18th, so make sure you study notes and any activities we have done in class.
We will move into Kinetic and Potential Energy within the next few weeks. Then we will start preparing for our next Engineering Project: Paper Roller Coasters which will start at the end of the month. Students will need to make sure they have the following materials: a piece of cardboard for the base of a rollercoaster, scissors, a pen, and to bring in the transparent tape if they have not done so!
Reminder: When students submit missing work, they must email me so I can update the gradebook. If a student does not communicate, I will not know when to update the gradebook. I have also encouraged students to add their parents/guardians to ensure we are all on the same page.
Mr. Cerutti - Pre-Algebra
Pre-Algebra students have been working on slope, proportional relationships, and both writing and graphing slope-intercept form. There will be a test over these concepts later this month (no sooner than the 20th, but likely the week of the 24th).
From Your Elective Teachers
Ms. Brazier - Band
Mrs. Delaney - PLTW: Computer Science for Innovators and Makers (CSIM)
CSIM students are learning about the parts of the MicroBit microcontroller while also getting started with algorithms. We will start with algorithms for simple, daily tasks and progress toward algorithms for their programs on the MicroBits.
Mr. Elliott - Art
7th Grade Art is learning the difference between physical freedom and social emotional freedom. While listening to the song I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free by Nina Simone; students free draw what they are feeling while listening to the song. Some drawings have been realistic and others abstract. Students are using their drawings as inspiration for a collage. Using the grid transfer method they are drawing their collages on to painting paper. Next week we will begin to paint a reproduction of their collage.
Mrs. Harris - Vocal Music & Honor Choir
We have begun learning new music in choir. We are focusing on getting better at sight-singing and reading rhythms as we learn new songs. Some students will be auditioning for the musical next week on January 19 at Barry.
