Getting started with a classroom Twitter account
What is Twitter?
Twitter is an information network made up of 140-character messages called Tweets. It's an easy way to discover the latest news related to subjects you care about.
Why is it useful?
Twitter contains information you will find valuable. Messages from users you choose to follow will show up on your home page for you to read. It’s like being delivered a newspaper whose headlines you’ll always find interesting – you can discover news as it’s happening, learn more about topics that are important to you, and get the inside scoop in real time.
Why is it useful at BFA?
Twitter allows you to share the wonderful things you do in your classroom. It also allows you to follow educators that are like minded and can make your professional development easier and hopefully more relevant. Follow who you want and have people you want to connect with follow you.
Why do I use Twitter?
I think Twitter is the easiest way to give parents some insight into my classroom by posting photos and captions of what is going on. I also find new teaching ideas and great articles for my professional development. I usually do this very early in the morning over a cup of coffee.

What is a Twitter handle and how do I use it?
@Bedford_Mrs_______________________________________@BedfordTara
- Your Twitter handle is your name on Twitter
- It is how people will find you and communicate with you
I have 2 Twitter handles:
- @Bedford_Mrs
- @BedfordTara
@Bedford_Mrs is my Professional account where I am the DPCDSB teacher and spokesperson for my class. Here I only follow and post educational related topics. It is advised that I post more personal topics, but I don't.
@BedfordTara is my personal account. I use this to follow the news when I am not at home and other topics that are not educational. (I never really use this account)
When BFA has a Twitter handle then you can include that in your Tweet and whoever is managing that account will re-tweet your Twitter message. That way all the parents and other teachers that follow the BFA handle will see your Tweet too.
Using '#' or hastags to get the BFA message out
- '#' will allow you to sort the information you want to see
- If we use a # for BFA then we can see what everyone who uses that #, for example #BFABulldogs
- # are also used to sum up a feeling about your tweet #CheckOutTheNewChickFromGA
