Reaching Out ~ February 2, 2018

From Mrs. Davies

Last school year we implemented a new reading program called Readers' Workshop. The workshop model is very different than the reading programs we adults experienced growing up. You probably remember having a reading "textbook". From within that "textbook" your teacher taught you the necessary strategies to become a proficient reader. The workshop model does not use textbooks. Instead the teachers teach reading strategies using real books, at each child's "just right" reading band. In order to provide the richest reading experience we need to have lots and lots of books! This year we began to create a "book room" for our students. How is this different than our library? The book room will house multiple copies of specific books that are shelved by the genre (mystery, historical fiction, etc.), and by the reading level bands. Students will then be able to go to the book room to choose books at their "just right" reading level within their current genre of study. Book room books will generally be used in class as part of instruction. This year our PTO has agreed to donate the profits from the upcoming SBS Bash to help us fill our book room! To do that we need your help! I encourage you to consider attending the Bash, or bid on one of the many exciting auction items online. Included in this Reaching Out is more information about the SBS Bash, and the online auctions. If you'd like to learn more about our literacy program please follow the link below. Your child's teacher is also happy to answer any remaining questions you have.

2017-2018 Stone Bank Yearbooks

Do you have some cute photos you've taken of your children this year or action shots at sporting events you've attended? Perhaps you chaperoned a field trip? Or just have some candid shots of your kids playing together with their friends? We are in need of photos for this years yearbook. Please see the instructions below for uploading any photos you may have:

In addition, earlier this week an envelope was sent home to those families that didn't purchase a yearbook. If you didn't receive an envelope then you purchased one on picture day. The due date to get the money back to Stone Bank is Wednesday, February 28th. Please make checks payable to Empire Photography.

Please remember that while your child is open enrolled into Stone Bank at any time it is very important that you notify the office of any address changes.

Attention Middle School Parents

Attention middle school parents, please take a look at the following attachment. It has great information and resources for you. Vaping is more popular with teens than ever, with more than one-third of high school students reporting having tried e-cigarettes. We talk about this in 7th and 8th grade SEL, but it is important for them to be talking about this with parents too.

Student Council ~ Pennies For Patients

Next month between February 12 and February 23, Stone Bank students,

families and staff will have the opportunity to participate in “Pennies for Patients.”

“Pennies for Patients” is an incredible event organized by the Leukemia and

Lymphoma Society (LLS) to help cure many types of cancers. Each day, members

of our school family can bring in coins, and put it in their class’s box. On

Mondays, we’ll bring in pennies. Tuesdays, we can bring in nickels. Dimes will be

brought in on Wednesdays. And quarters will be collected on Thursdays. On our

last day, Friday, February 23 participants may bring in any type of money,

including half dollar coins, dollar coins and paper money. Students will find out

more about how to be a hero in their classrooms in the next month. Parents will

receive print information about “Pennies for Patients” from their child(ren)’s

teacher. Please consider partnering with us to raise money for this great cause.

Project Linus

Please donate! We are still looking for polar fleece donations so we can make our Project Linus date of March 1st a success. All students are welcome to participate in this special project. Each blanket is made with 2 -1 and 1/2 yard sections of fleece. Blankets will be donated to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. With your help, lets warm the hearts of those children.

Box Tops for Education

Please keep sending in your Box Tops for Education. The student council uses proceeds to fund service projects, helps support the food pantry, and provide assistance where needed as well as scholarships to summer leadership camps. We will be sending them in at the end of the month for reimbursement.

Jump Rope for Heart 2018

During the week of February 12th - 16th, students in Kindergarten through 4th grade will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart in their P.E. classes, and students in 5th & 6th grades will be having a Hoops for Heart event. This is an annual Physical Education event that helps students learn the importance of heart health and encourages community service. Students have the option of raising money to support the American Heart Association (AHA), and are encouraged to jump in honor of someone they know who has dealt with heart disease or stroke. Information was sent home this week with students. Any students raising donations have until Thursday, February 15th to turn in their collection envelopes.
