Welcome Back to Keokuk High School

A Message from the Principal's Desk

Dear KHS Family,

I want to welcome you to another year together! If you drove by the high school over the summer, you can see we have been very busy! I am excited about the construction happening on our campus and can't wait to see the culmination of all the work that is taking place! As you may have heard, we have a new safe and secure entryway this year. All guests and all students will enter through one location. This means all other entry points to our building will be exit only. Also, we are thrilled about our brand new Fine Arts addition that will house our band and choir with state-of-the-art sound, technology, acoustics, and break-out rooms to encompass all. Keokuk has a long-standing history of Fine Arts in our community, and we believe that this addition to our school will maximize our efforts in providing the best education possible to our students in the arts. We hope to unveil our grand opening of the music addition in late September/early October!

A couple of housekeeping items: As you will see, our schedule has changed in an effort to keep the end of the school year out of June. This year we added 10 minutes to the normal school day. That means school will start at 7:50 and end at 3:00 on regular school days. Breakfast will be served daily at 7:30 a.m. Early outs will again be on Wednesdays, and school will conclude at 12:25 on those days; an optional lunch will be served from 12:25-12:50. I am attaching our schedule to the bottom of this letter. I am also attaching the schedule for the first day of school. Freshmen and new students only will meet in the morning on August 23rd, with all students returning to school at 11:30 with a kickoff assembly at 11:45 (information is below).

On the academic side, we have been reviewing data from last year and are working hard to continue improving the educational system at Keokuk High School. Our #1 goal is to ensure that every student that leaves Keokuk High School has the tools needed to be successful in the real world. We strongly emphasize the results of our state assessment results (Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress), which we refer to as a standardized test, and the MAP assessment, which we use for what we call a diagnostic tool. There are many other data points we track, but we lean heavily on these two because it allows us to know if our students are on track in the core areas of Math and ELA (Reading and Writing). We are building a double block for Math that will be co-taught with two teachers. Students in this class are typically 3-4 grade levels below their peers. We will utilize this extra time to work to get our students up to grade level standardized by being targeted on the skills we are lacking. We are going through multiple pieces of training with our teachers to prepare to roll this class out this fall. Students are still expected to take three years of Math but will receive credit for the additional course on their schedule. This is meant to be only one year and is targeted at Freshmen and sophomores.

Additionally, we still have Chief Literacy this year. This class coincides with PE or other electives, we work with the students on making sure that we give them a schedule that works best with their goals. Students work twice a week with the instructor in the areas of reading and writing. This class is targeted to meet the needs of the students. To give perspective, this class served over 100 students last year. Thirty students reached grade level proficiency, and 90% of students that took this section the previous year had exceptional growth. We are proud of the systems we have in place to reach the whole child at Keokuk High School; this is an example. Speaking of the whole child, I am pleased to announce that we are expanding our TAG program at Keokuk High School as we are adding a second teacher to help build our plan and ensure we have learning that meets the levels of all of our students.

Lastly, schedules are out now. I encourage you to have your child touch base with our incredible guidance team of Mr. Carter, Mr. Hardcastle, and Mrs. Figge to ensure your child's schedule is ready to go. One side note, we are still looking at options for our industrial technology program as we have not been able to fill that position. Students have been unenrolled in those classes for the time being. You may have seen my flyer over the summer, but we are working hard to fill this position. If you know someone in the trades field that is interested, please contact me directly. If you have not registered yet, there is still time to get that done. I look forward to another amazing year at Keokuk High School. We have such an incredible staff and students. I know we will have another year full of many memories. We mean what we say at Keokuk High School: Start Here. Succeed Anywhere.

Educationally Yours,
