Stone Bank School
Reaching Out ~ January 25, 2019
From Mrs. Wohlfiel, Interim Principal
Happy Snow Days! You have to love Wisconsin winters! Make sure you are safe on the roads and hopefully you can have some fun in this white stuff! Also, ensure your child grabs the appropriate attire to be outside to play - snow pants and boots are required to play in the snow. Please know we are brainstorming ideas for storage of these items, especially in the middle school.
We had our first cancellation of after-school events this week and our first snow day in a while. The decision to cancel after-school events was made after considering the weather, finding out what the consortium schools were doing and keeping in mind the rural roads we must drive. For snow days we follow the lead of Arrowhead High School. If the high school is closed, we are closed. We hope we were able to communicate these closings and cancellations effectively. In case we did not, we apologize.
I understand the dilemma that can be caused by cancellations and closings especially when parents work outside the home. In the military, active duty members are required to create a family care plan in case of a deployment. This plan was essential for deployment, listing the child’s caregivers during a deployment. We are not the military, but a child care plan is probably a pretty good idea in case of emergencies. Make sure you have a back up for child care and probably a back up to that back up. We are lucky that we have such kind, trustworthy neighbors and friends in our area to help out. Also know that we are here for you to help work through these times when they occur.
A well-deserved shout-out to our students who have represented our classes and our school at academic events the past few weeks:

(click here) Our cheer team, which is led by fifth grade teacher Ms. Rachel Roberts, performs Tuesday, January 29, at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.; Thursday, February 14, at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, February 29, at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Please welcome a new teacher to our staff! Ms. Sarah Bartel, a December 2018 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, started working with us this past Monday. She will be working as our middle school special education teacher.
Last week we practiced a school-wide fire drill. With the support of Steve Tidyman, the Stone Bank Fire Department Captain, we successfully had all of the students out of the building under the recommended time. We thank Captain Tidyman as well our students and staff. As a staff we reflected on how the drill went and are addressing items that were brought to our attention. Safety of our students and staff is a top priority.
It was great meeting all of you at the Meet and Greet/Coffee and Conversation events! It was also great to see the attendance at the Student Council’s Bagels with Buds under the guidance of Middle School teacher, Maureen Hofmann! What an awesome community event!
I wanted to remind those of you who have children who have cell phones about their usage in school. As listed in the student handbook, students should not use their cell phones during the school day unless given specific permission by an adult. This includes sending and receiving text messages. If you need to reach your child, please contact the main office. Also, please remind your child that if he/she feels ill, he/she should tell the teacher and then go to the health room. Should he/she must go home, the phone in the health room will be used to call you.
As I am new here and have a lot to learn, I am always open and willing to hear your thoughts, ideas and concerns and have an open-door policy. I can be reached by phone at (262) 966-2900 and by email at l.wohlfiel@stonebank.k12.wi.us. As we make our way through these transitions, we realize this is an opportune time to reflect and make decisions that put our learners at the very center of what we do. As parents/families, we can ask ourselves would we be viewed as an ambassador for our school? As an unofficial representative or messenger, are we doing our best for our school? Let’s do what we can to build on the excellence that is already here. Together we can make a positive difference.
Thank you for supporting Stone Bank School!

Growth Mindset in Second Grade
Growth Mindset in Second Grade
The second grade classes have been working hard this year on Growth Mindset versus Fixed Mindset. These are basic mindsets that can shape our lives. Fixed Mindset is the belief that our traits are fixed, or cannot be changed. Growth Mindset is the the belief that you are in control of your own ability, and can learn and improve. It is the key to success. Here are some exciting ways that second graders have been learning and working on Growth Mindset~
I learned that instead of thinking I made a mistake, I think about how mistakes help me learn. Bryce M.
I learned math facts in under 3 seconds. I used different strategies and didn’t give up. Johanna H.
I’ve learned to not give up and to keep trying. You have to keep trying so your brain can grow. I tell myself I can always improve. Coleton P.
I’ve never used erasers before, but ever since we’re learning growth mindset, I have not been scared to erase. I know mistakes are ok. Shannon V.
Perseverance is when you don’t give up and you keep trying. At gymnastics practice we set goals and I try to make my goal. Hailey P.
When you write and make a mistake, it doesn’t matter because you can fix it. Tyler C.
In school when I do extramath facts and when I get them wrong, I tell myself that I will get it next time. Walter N.
Sometimes I feel frustrated when I don’t know something. I tell myself it’s ok to try again a different way. Nicholas H.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Challenge
Student Council has voted to help Stone Bank School participate in the 16th Annual Feeding America Peanut Butter & Jelly Challenge. Only plastic jars or peanut butter and jelly will be accepted. The school that donates the greatest weight per student will win tickets to a Bucks game in March or April. We will be putting a box in each homeroom and one in the office for staff members. Each grade level will compete against the others for a prize. The grade level with the most jars collected per person will win. Well, really Feeding America recipients will win! Please help us in this endeavor by bringing in a plastic jar of peanut butter or jelly. We will start collecting right away and will be taking the jars to Feeding America at the end of February.

School Wide Food Drive
Middle School Recess
The playground equipment on the south side of the building is intended for elementary age children and while we would love for middle school children to play on it, recess staff was finding it to be unsafe for middle schoolers.
Middle school recess supervisors felt that students would be safer in a smaller area where all students could be seen by multiple supervisors. In the “new/old” space, students continue to have blacktop access with basketball hoops, four square, kickball options, a grassy/snowy space, and a GaGa pit. We have also instructed any staff or visitors to park in the front of the building for safety reasons related to the vehicles.
Our PTO has expressed interest in beginning a conversation with our staff and middle school students regarding middle school playground needs moving forward.
Go ahead and Google “Middle School Playground Equipment” and check out the images! There are some that could certainly double as an opportunity for outdoor fitness for our physical education classes as well!
Student Vaping
E-cigarettes are exploding in popularity, and are being used by adolescents. They are not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking, although they are marketed that way.
E-cigarettes, personal vaporizers, vape pens, e-cigars, pod systems, e-hookah, or vaping devices, are products that produce an aerosolized mixture containing flavored liquids and nicotine that is inhaled by the user. E-cigarettes can resemble traditional tobacco products or common gadgets like flash drives or pens.
WANT TO LEARN MORE? You will have an opportunity to learn more about vaping on Tuesday, February 19th here at Stone Bank School. Please join us from 6:30-7:30 p.m. that evening to learn more about the facts and health risks for your children.
See you then!!
