Maltby Messenger

November 7th Edition

~A message from the Principal~

Conference week has concluded and we now move into that busy time of year! We have celebrations and events that bind us together and remind us of how important our family is. We concluded with celebrating our Fun Run today and every student had a T-shirt and enjoyed the activities outside!

November inspires us to thank our Veterans. Tomorrow we will be joined by many Veterans to celebrate their service and commitment to our country. We appreciate all who served and those who are currently serving. The students will sing songs, show a video and shake all our Veterans hands! We are truly fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and greet all our Veterans.

If you are changing schedules for your child, it is very helpful if you call our office by 2:00 PM. We write notes and communicate with your child as to the change in plans. If you call later than 2 PM, it is difficult to get the note to your child. We appreciate your help with this.

Frosty nights and a good book go hand in hand. For readers who are reading at a high third grade and above level, the Mysterious Benedict Society series is a great mystery with a touch of fantasy. Mysterious Benedict Society books are written by Tenton Lee Stewart. This is a fun and engaging series. For our primary readers, You’re Here For a Reason, by Nancy Tillman, is about the magic of what each of us brings to the world. For the adults, I recently read, Wisdom Lunch Warrior, by Rod Olson. This book discusses how we lead and how we grow as people in life.

Have a great second week of November and stay warm!

Sincerely,

Bonnie McKerney

Big picture

In observance of the Veteran's Day Holiday, there will be no school on Monday, November 11th. School will resume on Tuesday, November 12th at 8:55 AM. Thank you!!

NEXT WEEK IS AN 'A' SPECIALIST WEEK

Idle Free Schools

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Maltby Elementary has instituted a vehicle idling policy at the school. All persons operating vehicles at the school should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • When waiting for students to be picked up, all engines should be shut off.
  • All drivers should turn off engines when they arrive at school and when they expect to be parked for more than 10 seconds.
  • If idling is necessary for temperature control, please restrict it to no more than 5 minutes.

We are implementing this policy to reduce the students' exposure to air toxins emitted in the exhaust of idling vehicles.

We encourage you to eliminate unnecessary idling not only at our school but anywhere you are waiting for more than 10 seconds. This simple change will improve the air our children breathe, as well as the air quality in our neighborhoods.

Thank you for your support...TURN YOUR KEY, BE IDLE FREE!!

And the WINNER is...

The Yearbook Cover Contest has officially ended. Thank you to ALL who submitted an entry. We had so many great options since Maltby has many aspiring artists. The choices were hard but a winner has been chosen. DRUM ROLL PLEASE...Annie Kelly, from Ms. Choate's class!! Congratulations Annie! You will be receiving a FREE yearbook at the end of the year. The cover will remain unseen until yearbooks come out in June. In addition, there were 12 other entries that will be featured as a collection on the back cover.

Library Happenings

This week in the library we've been reading, "Potato Pants!," by Laurie Keller. This book is one of the 20 picture books nominated for the 2020 Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award. We will be reading all 20 books during their class library time, and students will get the opportunity to vote for their favorite. The students have been having a great time making their own Potato Pants character in our Makerspace during recess time. Please encourage your kids to come check out the library during recess. Recess is a great opportunity for them to craft, construct, experiment, and READ!

Pajama Drive

You can help children in need!! As bedtime approaches each night, many children in our county have no bed to call their own, let alone pajamas to change into, or books to escape into. Maltby Elementary School is partnering with Scholastic Book Clubs Pajama Program to give pajamas and books to children in our community who live in shelters, group homes, foster care, or other similar circumstances.

Here's what we need:

  • Brand-new pajamas in all sizes, from newborn to adult.
  • Pajamas must be complete sets - a top and bottom, or an appropriate nightgown.
  • Pajamas for all seasons, but especially for the winter months.
  • Pajamas can be sent to school with your child/dropped off in the school office.
  • Pajama drive ends in November

Here's what Scholastic Books will do:

For each pair of pajamas, Scholastic will deliver a book to a child in need. They have pledged to donate 100,000 books. Let's help them reach that goal!

Maltby Mentors of Great Students

In lieu of the WATCH DOG program, Maltby has oped to do a program called, "The Maltby Mentors of Great Students." We want you to sign up to be a Maltby Mentor here at Maltby Elementary. This will provide you the opportunity to get involved in your child's school and be a mentor to other children. All sign-ups are done through Sign-up Genius. If you are interested, click on the link below to sign up on the calendar.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you soon!
