Happy Holidays
To our amazing 4-H community,
As 2023 comes to a close, we want to thank you all for an incredible year! Your involvement as 4-H families, alumni, volunteers, and community supporters has made the Washington County 4-H program one of the best in the state. We are so grateful to you all for the generosity, commitment, and grit you’ve shown throughout the past 12 months.
It’s hard to narrow down the best moments of the 4-H year, but we’d like to share some of our staff highlights with you:
The county fair is my favorite event of the year! It is exciting to see the 4-H youth grow in their projects, bond with friends and other 4-H families, all while making lifelong memories. It is always fun to see 4-H alum and generational families return to the fair year after year. -Ann Church
A highlight for me is the leadership I see developing at camps throughout the year - from watching the young people that were once campers step up into a new role as counselor or Student Director, to Ambassadors planning and executing Cloverbud Workshops, or Youth Teaching Youth teens taking the leap into a 4-H Camp experience for the first time as a junior in high school. -Megan Slater
My highlight of the year is working together with staff and volunteers on events and activities throughout the year but especially during the summer months, the interns bring new life and excitement to an already crazy busy time of year. Love seeing the families enjoying their programs! -Kathy Erf
With my first anniversary as 4-H staff in Washington County coming up, I’m reflecting on how many cool things I’ve been able to do at my job, while in the company of so many outstanding youth, volunteers, and partners! This year has had a lot of exciting moments for me: teaching youth how to make glow-in-the-dark geysers at a STEM workshop, taking a group of Cloverbuds fishing with Wild Rivers Conservancy at the Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center, planning a tri-county Fashion Revue, and working with the Food Stand Committee are just a few of the high points. I’m very grateful for the inspiring moments I’ve had with so many of you and look forward to becoming more familiar with our 4-H families. And a very big thank you to my coworkers, Kathy, Megan, Ann, Abbey, and Kelsey, for helping me in my new role! -Ashton Kulesa
We are looking forward to another great year with you all in 2024!
Wishing you all a Happy New Year,
Megan, Ann, Kathy, and Ashton

Project Bowl teams forming now!
Are Washington County 4-H’ers ready to start forming Project Bowl teams for the 2024 competitions? Check out the information below to see if this is something for you! Additional details can be found here; Minnesota Project Bowl information
What is 4-H Project Bowl?
Project Bowl teams are made up of 3-6 youth. Each has two divisions: Junior (grades 3-8) and Senior (grades 4 through 4-H graduation). 4-H areas: dairy, dog, general livestock(includes all of the following species; beef, sheep, swine & market goat), horse, llama/alpaca, poultry, and rabbit.
New in 2024, the age divisions have been restructured to provide three age categories with the dairy and general livestock contests. The new team divisions for dairy and general livestock will be junior (grades 3-5), intermediate (grades 3-8) and senior (grades 4+).
Why should I consider participating in Project Bowl?
Participating in Project Bowl will not only help prepare youth for County Fair Knowledge Quizzes, State Fair Interviews, etc., but many youth acknowledge how it has prepared them for many high school and college science classes!
Who coaches teams? Each team will need 2 screened 4-H volunteers to coach a team. Coaches will set up practice schedules with team members and work with resources to help team members prepare for the contest.
When? Project Bowl teams typically start practicing either in-person and/or virtually in the months of December or January. There are 3 Regional Competitions held in the state during the month of March. The nearest one to Washington County would be held on Saturday, March 9th at Hastings High School. Typically it is an all day event, based on if the team advances to the finals.
How? Resources are listed on the Minnesota 4-H website under Project Bowl. Questions for the contests are taken from these resources.
Regional winners advance to the 4-H State Project Bowl. Winners at the state level in dairy, general livestock, horse and poultry go on to national contests!
Now is the time to gather your friends together, recruit a coach, study hard, and most of all have fun during the project bowl season! If you are interested in participating or coaching, please contact Ann @ churc109@umn.edu

Join the virtual 4-H plant science team: Meet others who share the same passions and make new friends
The 4-H plant science team has tested virtual teams and found them to be effective in providing equal opportunities for youth to participate in showcase events. Last year, several teams used virtual practices to get ready for in-person events like the 4-H plant science project bowl and crop scouting. This format has helped 4-H plant science programming reach more youth across the state, who can join virtual teams without having to form teams within their county. The 4-H plant science team is eager to form more virtual teams and welcomes interested youth to join and make new friends statewide. Fill out this form to indicate your interest.
