Pajama Talk with Yoksi
Monday Night at 10 p.m don't miss out!
Tonight's topic Bilingual Education..
This topic is very important to me because growing up my mom refused to put me in a bilingual education program. She believed that if she put me in a bilingual education program I wouldn't learn english. Unfortunately I didn't get the opportunity to learn Spanish the way I would've loved too.
Why is there so many negative views on bilingual education?
According to Ovando's chapter 1, The ESL program is not very effective in teaching bilingual students English, and still helping them retain their native language. I believe students would benefit more being taught in a dual two-way immersion program. In this way both languages are well developed.
A very special guest tonight!
We will be interviewing my brother Norberto on his frustration on not knowing Spanish. Hear what he has to say.
Is there a way we can change these negative views?
As bilingual educators we need to educate people about the benefits of bilingual education. Explain the importance of having the proper bilingual education program. Emphasize that forcing kids to learn english is not beneficial. Ovando also stated in chapter 5, "When a student is well developed in one language the second language will be easier for them to grasp."
*Dual two-way immersion Program
Is when the student is taught in both English and their native language. Two-way bilingual immersion programs are additive programs in that a second language is acquired while maintaining the first language of the students.
What could've helped my mom change her mind about bilingual education.
Im almost certain if my mom knew about Cummins developmental interdependence hypothesis, she would've put my brothers and I in a bilingual education program. The theory suggest that the more developed the first language the easier it would be to develop the second language.
