Message From Principal Engdall
Warm Greetings Shaw Community,
It was so incredible to see so many of you at Back to School Night! Thank you. We know you are eager to get our children back to school safely and we are ready to get back to in-person instruction and revive the Montessori Magic that fills our campus.
We are in desperate need of PEER staff to fill 5 spots. If you know of any high school or college students that would like a part time job working with children, this is their opportunity! They may apply at: jobs.phxschools.org/peer-instructional-assistant/job/15898222
We are also in need of substitute teachers. If you are interested or know someone who is please contact me at: susan.engdall@phxschools.org
The red curb in front of the school is a “kiss and drop” zone. Please do not park there. If you need to park use the limited parking in the lot or the street. This will keep our drop off flow speedy and safe. Additionally, should your child be bringing a large load of school supplies—too big to manage, please label the box with the teacher and child’s name and leave it on the tables set up in front. We will deliver it to the classroom.
All the best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Laura Hildwein
Welcome back!!
I wanted to identify some of the things I do to support the Shaw community.
On campus I will be teaching Second Step, a social emotional learning curriculum, in some of the classrooms during the year. Some of the topics covered will be empathy, emotion management and problem-solving skills.
I can provide extra support to students who are struggling academically, with home issues or just life issues in general. You may reach out to me if you feel your child would benefit from extra support at any point in the year. A teacher may also identify a concern with a student and come to me, at which time I will reach out to the family.
If your student was receiving services from me last year it will not automatically carry over. I need a new permission slip each year to see students individually or in small groups. If you feel your child needs support, please reach out to me.
I can also support families with food, clothing and housing needs.
I look forward to working with you this year!

Early Student Pick Up Procedures
From the office:
Here at Shaw, we discourage picking up your child early. We also understand that life happens and sometimes you have to. In the event you have to pick up your student early, please note:
Beginning August 5, 2021 Early Student Pick Up Procedures will be enforced.
It is important for parents to know to plan accordingly in the event you need to pick your child up early from school:
Parents or adult needs to PHYSICALLY be present at the office BEFORE we will call a child out of class. You may not phone the office prior to your arrival to have your student waiting. For full-day schedule students, you must be present prior to 3:10pm in order to retrieve your child early. If you arrive after 3:10pm we will not be able to process your request and you would need to wait until the official end of the school day to pick up your student. On early release days, this time would be 1:15pm.
For preschoolers with a pick up time of 12:35, the cut off for early pick up would be 12:10pm. On preschool early release days that time is 11:10am.
Please plan accordingly for doctor and dental appointments or other obligations that may require you to pick up your child early from their instructional day.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Shaw PTA
Sometimes you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do -- even if you don’t want to do it.
But we had to do it.
We postponed Bingo Night.
Bingo night has always been a fun way to get together at the beginning of the year. You meet all sorts of families that you haven’t known before. Your kids get all hyped up on Bingo and sugar. You eat spaghetti made by Ms. Chan’s Upper El students. You play Bingo and never win (ok, well, that’s just me).
But really it was an excuse to see people you haven’t seen in a while, meet a whole bunch of new people and connect with the Shaw community at the beginning of the year.
Heather Vittori (who is an awesome parent to know and if you don’t, you should meet her at the next PTA meeting because she is fabulous) had it all planned. She had the prizes, the Bingo cards, the daubers, the decorations -- everything ready to go.
And then… well… it was a flashback of March 2020 all over again. Some school districts were having problems with COVID breakouts. Then a few more. And just this week, one Phoenix area school sent its entire 5th and 6th grades home for distance learning. We can’t do this again.
So Heather and I got on to the phone and ran through all of the possible ways to make this work. And the best way to make this work was to not have Bingo Night right now.
And while I’m super bummed because I wanted to come back to school like it’s 2018 without a care in the world. (Remember 2018? When you watched TV shows without cringing at all of the people standing so close to each other without masks?) The fact is, this isn’t 2018.
Not to get too philosophical here, but Ghandi said, “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” In my very unofficial and unscientific estimation, something around 80% of the kiddos at our school are under 12 and CAN NOT be vaccinated at this point. Those are our vulnerable members, and it's up to us to protect them.
And if it means no Bingo Night right now, that’s what it means.
Instead, we are extending the hours of the clothing swap so everyone will have a chance to get to the school after work and get some new (to you) clothes for these munchkins.
Stay safe and well and I’ll see you at the first PTA meeting of the year on Wednesday, August 18th at 6pm.
