February 20 - We will welcome our upcoming 6th graders from the feeder elementary schools for an orientation from 9:00 AM until 12:15 PM, and we will host their parents that night at 7:00 to learn more about Pence and scheduling.
February 25, 26 - The counselors will visit the feeder elementary schools to talk to the upcoming 6th graders about scheduling for next year.
Internet Safety / Digital Literacy Presentation
Please mark your calendar and plan to attend an informative parent session about internet safety on Wednesday, February 13th at 7:00 PM. Detective Greg Miller and Dr. Elena Savina will provide parents with valuable information about the digital world many of our students interact with and the impact the interactions can have.
JMU - Expanding Your Horizons Conference (For Girls in Grades 6-9)
The 2019 EYH conference is designed for girls in grades 6-9. This year’s program features 22 different workshops on a wide variety of topics, including biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, health science, physics, mathematics, and statistics. The conference will also include keynote talks, a chemistry demonstration, and lunch with JMU students. The conference is free, but advance registration is required.
All students who want to attend EYH must pre-register online. Pre-registration will be open from 9am on Friday, February 8, 2019 until 9pm on Saturday, February 16, 2019. All students who pre-register will either be accepted into the conference or placed on a waiting list. (This is NOT a first-come, first served process. A lottery system will be used if we have more students pre-register than we have spots available.) Acceptance/wait list decisions will be e-mailed by Tuesday, February 19. Students who are accepted will then have to complete additional steps to finish their conference registration and secure their spot in the conference. Full information about this new process and the link for pre-registration can be found on our website: http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/eyh. Please remember to check your calendar for date conflicts before pre-registering.
Afternoon Student Pick-Up: Request for Cooperation
We are very fortunate to have a school located in the middle of a great community. We have formed a partnership with the town's staff and residents. We could not ask for a better situation! However, the location of the school also makes it so we are land-locked. As you are well aware, the afternoon pick-up line can back up causing some traffic issues. There are a few parents who are choosing to bypass this by parking in locations alongside the roads in town and asking their students to walk to meet them. This is creating a situation that is frustrating for town residents and unsafe for students. There are homeowners having their yards effected by vehicles pulling alongside the road and students are being put at risk as they cross the street in front of traffic.
The solution to this problem is quite simple. First, please ONLY pick up your students alongside the sidewalk in front of the school. Second, if parents make the choice to come a few minutes AFTER our afternoon bell (which rings at 3:18 pm), you'll find that the line has relieved itself by 3:25 pm - 3:30 pm. This is a very short wait for students who have adult supervision in the front of the school. We have worked closely with our transportation department as well as the Dayton Police Department over the years. While there are other possibilities, this is simply the easiest solution and it takes your cooperation.
Thank you for your consideration as we work to keep our students safe and our partnership with the town positive.
