Flag and facts
The national flag of Germany consists of three equal horizontal bands of black (top), red, and gold. Black, red and gold have played an important role in German history and can be traced back to the medieval banner of the Holy Roman Emperor- a black eagle with red claws and red beak on a gold field. When Germany was unified in 1871 under Otto von Bismarck, it chose a national flag with horizontal stripes of black-white-red (black and white are the colors of Prussia, of which Bismarck was Chancellor, and red was from Hanseatic League). After Germany’s defeat in the First World War a republic was declared in 1919 and the black, red, and gold flag was restored.
