Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term 2 Week 9 - 24 June 2016
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
We are now quickly coming to the end of Semester One with only next week remaining. Teachers are now finalising the Semester Reports. These Reports are so important for students in all year groups, to reset their academic goals to improve on their Semester One results. It is my expectation that all students aim to improve their academic standing in the second half of the year.
This year, as mentioned in last week’s Newsletter we introduce a new style Report. The Report will be available to all parents electronically by next Friday, 1 July by using their SEQTA log in details. Early in Term 3, all parents have the opportunity to discuss the Semester Report with teachers at the Parent, Student, Teacher Interviews. This date is set for Wednesday 27 July from 3.50pm to 8.00pm. It is highly recommended that all parents take advantage of this opportunity.
Early in Term 3, seven of our Year 11 students with three of our staff are travelling to Ngalangangpum School, Warmun to experience the College’s first Immersion Experience. As a school community, we are supporting our group by having a fundraiser event next Thursday toward both the Immersion Program and LifeLink. Students are required to come to school in full Sport Uniform and may then add their favourite sporting team colours, uniforms or paraphernalia for a gold coin donation. Added to this, special food stalls will be available for students to purchase food during lunchtime.
Our last week of Term 2, is NAIDOC week at the College. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a College, we will engage in many activities that embraces Aboriginal culture including a Smoking Ceremony at next week’s Whole School Assembly. Nationally, NAIDOC Week is held from July 3 to July 10 and typically there will be many community events for all to enjoy.
Next Friday is a Staff Professional Development Day and so students will conclude Term 2 on Thursday 30 June. Please note the College Administration Office will be closed on Friday 1 July.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio
Principal

SUBJECT SELECTION
Year 11 Parent / Student Information Night – Subject Selection 2017
When: Monday 27 June
Venue: Sports and Performing Arts Centre of Excellence
Time: 7.00pm
What do I need to do if I wish to go to University? What is the difference between Uni and TAFE? Do my subjects give me the best opportunity to go to University? The transition from Year 11 to Year 12 can be a very easy task if you know the direction you wish to take beyond school.
However, if you have not achieved the desired results in your ATAR courses at the end of Semester 1 or have decided to change your pathways, what are your options now?
The Parent/Student Information Night is a compulsory event for families at the College.
At least one parent and the student entering into Year 12 are required to attend. To allow for all parents to attend this evening, a slightly later starting time has been organised. I look forward to meeting you during the evening.
Mr Vince Bellini
Deputy Principal of Curriculum

2016 INSTRUMENT/SINGING MUSIC PROGRAM
Musical instrument and singing lessons are available to students at Emmanuel Catholic College. A varied selection of instruments and tuition is made available based on demand. Students apply on the attached form and return it as soon as possible. Students will be notified in regard to their application. Music Tutors will be appointed depending on the need for each category. It is expected that students purchase or provide their own instrument.
Lessons are normally scheduled during school hours on a half-an-hour rotational basis so that students do not repeatedly miss the same class. Students are responsible for checking their lesson times in advance and attending lessons on the scheduled day and time. Tutors need as much notice as possible if they are to try to reschedule a lesson. Students who do not attend lessons at the required time and have not notified the Tutor in advance that they will be absent or late, will forfeit the lesson and any time after the lesson has commenced spent trying to locate them and be billed accordingly.
All students on completion of an instrument or vocal lesson are to complete and sign the lesson register file held in the Music Department. Not all lessons will be in sequential order across each term.
For more information and an application form please go to: https://www.emmanuel.wa.edu.au/resources-new/file/12-2016-music-tuition-form.html
EMMANUEL ENVIRO CLUB OUT ON EXCURSION
On Friday 17 June Emmanuel members of the Enviro Club headed out for a day of environmental activities at three different locations;
- Henderson Waste Recovery Facility
- Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC)
- Murdoch University Wetlands
The information learnt at each of the facilities;
Henderson Waste Recovery Facility
- Claire took us around the Henderson site. It is not called a tip.
- There are two different pipes that come out of landfill cells – a black pipe carrying Methane gas to a power plant to be converted into energy for 3000 homes. A white pipe that takes leachate or contaminated water out of the cell to be evaporated.
- I didn’t even know there was a recycle shop at Henderson. There were so many things there for such a cheap price!
Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC)
- Emma showed us her vege garden that was growing some different vegetables which was interesting to see. She also had some awesome art work in her garden.
- The green waste that goes into our green bins gets collected and turned into compost to be placed on farms.
- Nappies should go in the green bin – they can take over 500 years to decompose! If you put nappies in the yellow topped bin that whole bin will need to be sent to landfill due to contamination.
Murdoch University Wetlands
- We met Renae and she showed us around her school – they have a massive library where there were lots of people studying for their exams.
- We learned about being Environmental Scientists looking at the different conditions for turtles to live in the wetland areas.
- There were a large number of mozzies and other bugs throughout the wetland area.
- At university they have some great deck chairs and bean bags to relax on during lunch time!
A bus was provided by Cockburn City Council for the students to travel to the various locations which was greatly appreciated. The students were extremely well behaved and represented the College very well. The students will apply their knowledge to the work we have been doing in Enviro Club and teach the other students this important information.
Mrs Kylie Kingdon
Head of Learning Area Humanities and Social Sciences
MORE FEAST DAY
On Wednesday 22 June, More House celebrated the Feast Day of our patron saint, Thomas More. In Period 1, students and staff attended a Liturgy in the Library. During the Liturgy, the students participated in various readings and heard from Year 7 student, Eric Babu on his research on who Thomas More was.
This was followed by a short video where participants heard from staff and students from Year 7 to 12 on their experience on what it is like to be in More House. Students did an activity in Form groups where they reflected on how they have demonstrated More House’s core values of ‘strength,’ ‘loyalty’ and ‘wisdom’ and they wrote these thoughts down on pre-designed sheets of our core values. The Liturgy ended with our More House prayer which the students read with great gusto.
At lunchtime, students and staff of More House were treated to a free sausage sizzle. There were various activities which the students participated in such as basketball, a treasure hunt where students had to locate ‘More’ logos which were placed around the school and a "Guess the Number of Lollies" competition.
Angus Cucevic from 7 More was the winner of the lollies with a correct guess of 182 while Lachlan Bonham, 8 More, and Nicholas Lim, 9 More, were the winners of the treasure hunt.
Overall, students and staff had a great day on More Feast Day.
I would like to thank all members of the More SLT and other students for their assistance in decorating the library and for helping out during the lunchtime activities.

YEAR 4's EXPERIENCE "A DAY IN THE LIFE" OF AN EMMANUEL STUDENT
On Thursday 16 and Friday 17 June the Year 4 students from three of our local Catholic Primary school attended “A Day in the Life” of an Emmanuel student. We had Year 4 students from Mater Christi Catholic Primary School, St Jerome’s Catholic Primary School and Hammond Park Catholic Primary School, all participate in the event. It was a fantastic opportunity for the primary school students to experience a little bit of what to expect when they transition from primary school to High school in the next few years. It was also a great opportunity for our College to connect with our local feeder primary schools and strengthen the relationship between schools from our local community.
The students met in the Library, where they were greeted and listened to presentations by some of our Year 7 students. The presentations outlined “Emmanuel” from a student perspective. Throughout the day the Year 4’s decorated cupcakes, made milkshakes, participated in a dance and drama workshop and spent some time conducting and editing interviews using their iPads. The students got a taste of the Design & Technology Learning area by creating their own engraved key ring or name plate for their desks back at school.
The Year 4’s experienced what High School Sport has to offer with our Netball & Football Academy students putting the Year 4’s through clinics on our oval, and in our wonderful new Sport and Performing Arts Centre of Excellence (SPACE). The day culminated with a much deserved sausage sizzle and juice box on the steps to the SPACE, whilst being treated to a concert by many of our very talented music students.
A huge thank you to all staff and students involved in the day, in particular to Mr Oddie, Mr Gherardi and Mrs Raja-Snijder for running the events in my absence.
Finally thank you to the staff at Mater Christi, St Jerome’s and Hammond Park for supporting the event. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

YEAR 10 FOOTBALL CARNIVAL
On Wednesday 15 June our Year 10 Football Academy travelled to Ferndale Park to compete in the Annual Year 10 Football Carnival. It was a great experience for the boys as they got to play against three different schools including Clontarf College, Mandurah Catholic College and Seton Catholic College.
It turned out be a very good day as we won all three games convincingly. The boys played some exceptionally good football throughout the day, where there skills were a standout amongst the other schools. By winning all three games on the day, it allowed us to make our way into the finals on Wednesday 22 against three other schools who also won through to the finals, including Mackillop, La Salle and CBC.
Again, the boys started very well, beating both Mackillop and La Salle in the first two games. That left a Grand Final between Emmanuel and CBC. It was a great game with the lead changing on a regular basis. In the end CBC got the better of us and ran out winners by nine points. As always, we couldn’t fault our boys’ effort throughout both days of the competition. I was very proud of the boys and the way in which they represented our College.
Thank you to all the boys for your efforts over the past month, you are a credit to yourselves and the Emmanuel community.

Coach

INTRODUCING GEORGIA!
We are currently fundraising for a 7 year old girl in our community, Georgia Farnan. Georgia has a rare condition known as Dystonia. Georgia’s condition is progressively getting worse. It affects her by causing involuntary muscle contractions. Georgia has never walked unaided. Depending on the day Georgia currently relies on a walking frame, crutches or a wheelchair allowing her to move around. As the condition progresses she is losing her ability to walk longer distances, she is using her wheelchair more and more and is requiring more assistance than ever.
Thankfully, this doesn’t break her spirit. This bright, bubbly, determined little 7 year old will give everything her best go. Georgia's particular genetic mutation has only been found in one other person and in that person it has manifested itself in a totally different form. This means that doctors have no idea where Georgia's condition is headed. There is no set path for treatment or any statistics on how successful particular treatments may or may not be. As there is no treatment available in Australia, PMH has referred Georgia overseas to a specialist for further testing. Georgia and her family need to travel back and forth to London to have appointments, testing, research and hopefully a treatment.
In following the giving spirit of Jesus the staff of Mater Christi have set up an account to collect donations to assist Georgia’s family with the many costs associated with research and getting Georgia the best treatment possible.
We invite you to read more about Georgia’s story on her everyday hero account. Georgia’s Gigantic Grin

All donations are greatly appreciated and thank you for your support.

CANTEEN NEWS
Emmanuel’s New Online Ordering & Cashless Canteen is Here!
Our school has now introduced a great new online ordering and cashless system for our College Canteen called FlexiSchools. This system allows parents, students and staff to place orders from home, work or school at any time. The payment is also done online, so less paper bags, cash, cheques, and envelopes are sent via your student to school. As well as being convenient for parents, the online orders are much faster and easier for the school coordinator to process - so it makes everyone’s life a little easier. FlexiSchools is well established and tested, operating in hundreds of schools across Australia.
Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click “Register Now.” You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.
This system also utilises students current Transperth SmartRider cards for payment and purchases. You will need to link your child’s SmartRider card to your Flexischools account and nominate a payment option. Any balance currently on your child’s SmartRider is for travel only. Once you have linked this to FlexiSchools, you will have a separate canteen account and you will also have your existing travel account. These are two independent card balances on the one card, and operate separately. Travel account funds cannot be utilised for canteen purchases, and vice versa.
There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, Mastercard (credit and debit) and Bank Transfer. The system operates via a pre-paid account, so you no longer have to worry about the manual process of sending payments into school, and you can easily budget your students spending and expenses throughout the year. The system is now available, so we look forward to seeing your next canteen order online!
If you have any questions about the online services we are introducing, please ask Mrs Belinda Colpitts our Canteen Manager for more information.
See the step by step process on the following pages.
Thank you for your support.

LEARNING EXCELLENCE
WHY STUDENTS NEED TO TURN OFF ELECTRONIC DEVICES AN HOUR BEFORE SLEEP
Artificial light from electronic and other devices generally emit a blue light (it may not actually look blue, but that is the underlying light). Blue light, along with ultraviolet light is a type of non-visible light at a very short wavelength. You can see an image of the spectrum here: http://www.bluelightexposed.com/#what-is-blue-light
What does blue light do to the human body?
Non-visible light has a lot of energy and studies show that a lot of exposure to this type of light can do damage to your eyes and also impair your sleep cycle. During sleep lots of essential physical processes take place and it is also when learning from the day is consolidated in memory. So getting enough sleep is essential for students.
Blue light is naturally generated only during the day, from sunlight. When it gets dark, naturally occurring blue light ceases, signaling the body to produce melatonin, the hormone associated with sleep. Using artificial lighting and devices which emit a blue light at night confuses the body-clock (the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle) by stopping the body from producing melatonin. This can result in disrupted sleep patterns including difficulty in falling asleep and staying asleep and shortened sleep duration.
Those at greatest risk from night-time exposure to blue light are those with existing sleep disorders and adolescents who often experience delayed sleep patterns as a result of biological changes.
What can I do to limit my exposure to blue light at night?
Some suggestions include:
- Be exposed to sunlight during the day to assist in accurately setting your body clock.
- Stop using all electronic devices preferably at least 2 hours before bed.
- Turn off all artificial lighting 1-2 hours before bed.
- Get a red or orange reading lamp, which does not emit blue light.
- Use blue light blocking glasses at night.
- Install a program or app on your computer or device to change the type of light it emits. A variety of programs are available including F.lux, EasyEyez, Night Filter, Zzz iPhone filter, Bluelight and Twilight
- Invert the colours on your iPhone or iPad.
- Turn the brightness down on your device for a few hours before bed (not perfect, but better than nothing!)
You can learn more about how to optimise your performance as a student at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au Email me at martin.val@emmanuel.wa.edu.au for the username and password.

SCHOOL FEE ACCOUNTS NEWS
This reminder is to parents with overdue school fees. We are confident that all of our parents appreciate the necessity and expectation in regards to paying school fees on time. With this in mind it is expected that if you have not yet paid your semester 1 fees please make every effort to pay your account as soon as possible so that future plans and developments at the College are not affected.
As the end of Term 2 is drawing to a close, it is timely for you to review the agreement you have with the College to ensure your account will be finalised by the end of November 2016.
Should any family find that they are not able to manage their current repayment schedule, please contact the College to make arrangements to meet with the Principal.
Thank you for your support.

EMMANUEL CATHOLIC COLLEGE ENROLMENTS (2017—2019)
Emmanuel enrolments have become very competitive over the last couple of years and places for 2017 are now on a waiting list only.
We commenced interviewing for 2018 at the beginning of the year and again enrolment places are in demand. If there are any Siblings that haven’t enrolled as yet they may risk missing out on a place for their child. It is not an automatic enrolment because you already have a child at the College, separate applications need to be submitted.
If you are interested in a place for 2019, we would encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible. Although we don’t start interviewing until next year we have an large number of applications already and envisage that not all applications for 2019 will be interviewed as we reach our maximum numbers.
Applications can be downloaded on www.emmanuel.wa.edu.au or alternatively, email our Registrar on enrolments@emmanuel.wa.edu.au requesting a copy of our Prospectus.
Students in Catholic Primary Schools will have a strong preference in gaining an enrolment.
