Hoping to Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year?

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer!

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule. All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

Registration Still Open for Many Awesome Fall ASA Classes!

We've decided to keep registration open a little longer for many of our confirmed After School Arts (ASA) classes this fall. We'd love to have your CLX leader join us for ASA adventures! Registration is still open at for Exploring the Art of a Scientist; Finger and Hand Felt Puppets; Sock Friends: Families Are Fun; Board Games; FEAST; Dulce Sweet Spanish; Sun Soo Intro to Tae Kwon Do; and Storytelling, Woodworking, and Junk Art! Please contact if you have any questions.

Join CLXLeaders for a Good Cause--Eblen Charities' Walk, Run, or Roll!!!

Claxton is putting a team together for Eblen Charities 18th Annual Walk, Run or Roll event taking place Saturday October 13th at 9:00 am. All funds raised help Eblen Charities to keep helping out more than 125,000 local families with medical care and supplies, travel assistance, dental and prescription care, funding assistance for food, rent, heat and other emergency aid. We value Eblen's services to families and want to get together a team of amazing CLXLeaders who will WALK with us and raise money for Eblen. Want to join? Register here by finding team name CLXLeaders on Eblen's website.

Parent Room Reps Still Needed!

Room Reps are still needed in several of our Claxton classrooms, so please consider taking on this role for your student’s class! The intended role of the Room Rep is to help distribute important information via email to all class families regarding class and PTO events. For example, sign-up sheets for volunteers at the Fun Run or Fall Carnival will be sent out through Room Reps. We want every family to be informed about events and allowed the opportunity to volunteer at Claxton. The Room Rep also collaborates with the classroom teacher regarding class needs, which may include extra supplies, snacks, or volunteers for class events.

Room reps are still needed for the following classes:

2nd: Kickert

3rd: Conti and Seimer

5th: Autrey

Are you interested in being a room rep this year? If so, please contact Amanda Pattanayak at or at (617) 953-0855 as soon as possible.

Back-to-School Dance

Rock on 3rd - 5th graders! Back-to-school dance is Thursday Sept 20! The Claxton school dances are so much fun and the kids have a blast PLUS it is a fundraiser to help cover cost of field trips! Kids go straight from class to the dance, which lasts from 3:00-4:00. Cost is $3 for dance, $2 for pizza, and $1 for snacks and drinks. Admission or food vouchers available if needed. Look for permission slip coming home with your child. We do NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS! Click this link to see how you can help by contributing drinks and snacks!

Author Visit with Grace Lin

GRACE LIN IS COMING TO CLAXTON!! This author visit on Monday September 17th at 9 am is an enormous honor for Claxton Elementary School. Grace is a Newbery Honor winning author and illustrator of picture books, early chapter books and chapter books. Her most well-known books are Where The Mountain Meets the Moon and The Year of the Dog and she is touring to promote her new picture book, Big Mooncake for Little Star, which I will be reading to all K-2 classes. An author study on Grace Lin had already been in the works for later in the school year (in an arts collaboration with Ms. Olson and Ms. Rigsby!) so to have her be able to visit us is just the most exciting news. Watch for book order forms in Thursday folders if you would like to order an autographed copy of one of her books for your child. A big thanks to Malaprops Bookstore and Cafe for this opportunity!

WAIT--THERE'S MORE! Another Author Visit for 4th Graders!

Also exciting is that our 4th graders get to meet with Sheila Turnage, author of the Mo and Dale Mystery series including Three Times Lucky. Sheila is also a Newbery Honor winner!! Some of our 4th graders had read this in a book club last year and loved it! This author visit will take place in the back of the media center on Tuesday September 18th at 9:30. A big thanks to Malaprops Bookstore and Cafe for this opportunity!
