Scholastic Book Fair!
Hello everyone! Below you will find updates for each grade level for the month of October. I also wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who came to support the Scholastic Book Fair earlier this month! It was a great success, and I hope students who bought new books are enjoying them! A huge thank you also goes out to the PTO for all of their hard work to run it and make it happen!
I'm also starting to add some new decorations to the library. Be on the look out for some changes throughout the year!
Kindergarten
During the past month, kindergartners have reviewed the parts of books and focused on what illustrators and authors do. This week, we started learning about fiction vs. non-fiction. We will continue with this skill for a few weeks. Students have also started to use shelf-markers to carefully select books off of the library shelves when they check out! They have done very well with this skill. We have been reading several Goldfinch books, too.
Book checkout day is FRIDAY for both classes.

1st Grade
During the last few weeks, 1st graders have been reading different Goldfinch Award books. We've reviewed the parts of the books, including illustrator and author. We've also started looking at ABC order and how the library is organized.

2nd Grade
During the last few weeks, we have practiced ABC ordering and talked about how the library is organized. We have also been reading some Goldfinch Award books. Second graders have also been introduced to searching in our library catalog on our library iPads!

3rd Grade
During the last few weeks, we have reviewed how the library books are organized. Students have put fictions books in the correct ABC order, and then also practiced shelving those books in the correct places! Third graders have also learned how to use our library iPads to search our library catalog when it it time for their checkout.
I also collaborated with Mrs. Cernuto's class with a mini-unit on letter writing. I read "The Gardener" to students to show examples of friendly letters. We learned the format of a friendly letter, and then brainstormed ideas for what to write to parents and relatives to welcome them to Back to School Night. Students then went through the process of writing a draft letter, editing the letter, and writing a final letter, which I hope you saw at Back to School Night!

4th Grade
During the last few weeks, we have continued to watch some of the book trailers for this years' Iowa Children's Choice Award books. Several of these books are being continually checked out from our library, and students report that they're enjoying these titles! There continues to be a waiting list for some of these titles! Fourth graders have also started the "Type to Learn" program to build their keyboarding skills. They have also started using the library iPads to search our library catalog during checkout time.

5th and 6th Grade
5th and 6th graders were learning about our visiting author, Delia Ray, this past month. We worked through a PearDeck presentation about her, which is like an interactive slides presentation. Students were able to answer questions or offer ideas at various points of the presentation. We enjoyed learning about Delia Ray and how she became a writer. All students have read her historical fiction novel, "Here Lies Linc". It has a great connection to us at Mann as it takes place in our area! When she wrote the book, she even interviewed a few Mann students! We had a fabulous visit with her this past Wednesday at Shimek Elementary. We are thankful for the support of Hill Bank and the ICCSD Foundation to make this event possible.
We also went on a walking field trip to Oakland Cemetery today. "Here Lies Linc" takes place in and around the cemetery. We enjoyed seeing several sights from the book on our trip!
Book checkout day is on WEDNESDAY for Mrs. Mulligan.
Book checkout day is on THURSDAY for 6th grade.
