Messages from Principal Lefere
Masks
I want to thank all students and families for being supportive of wearing masks. Even though having students wear masks is not ideal, the staff at Howbert love being able to see students in-person each day.
This school year, the school will only communicate information concerning positive or probable positive cases and quarantines to the families of students that were in close contact or in the same homeroom classroom.
We will not communicate out to all families when there is a positive case at the school.
Families can check the District 11 COVID-19 dashboard at any time for information on positive cases at the school. The front office at Howbert can also help if you have any questions.
Phone Calls from Howbert
If you receive a phone call from Howbert Elementary and are not able to answer it, please check your voicemail prior to contacting the office. It is our policy that whenever we call families, we will always leave a message if the call is not answered. On occasion, we use a phone call sent out to all families for reminders.
Star Party Info
Tuesday, September 14, 7:00-8:30p
Enjoy a night under the stars with activities for students and families in the gym PLUS telescopes on the playground where you can join astronomers from the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society as they share views through their telescopes including close up views of the Moon, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn!
Activities in the gym will wrap up at 8:10 so everyone can head out to the playground for a green-laser pointer guided tour of the night sky by an astronomer! We’ll watch and point out satellites flying overhead too!
*** Mask wearing is required while in the gym***
** If it is stormy/bad weather, we will communicate on our website and Howbert Facebook page the day of the event. Rain date is Thursday, Sept. 16, 7:00-8:30p

Art Education News from Ms. Susie Gray
The Howbert Art Studio is up and running this year! We're spending the first few weeks learning and reviewing art skills, techniques, and procedures that keep our creativity flowing.
We have big news! Jasmin Kuykendall is joining the Art Studio as our student teacher first quarter! Over the next two weeks Ms. K will slowly take over teaching all Art classes while I coach her through instruction, class management, unit planning, and all the details of caring for young artists. Second quarter she'll move to Coronado High School to complete her student teaching. (We're telling the students she'll be with us until about Halloween) I'm SO excited to have Ms. K with us, she's passionate, thoughtful, kind, creative, well prepared, and already well loved by our students!
Fun Facts about Ms. K:
She's a Howbert Hornet! Ms. K attended Howbert K-5 and went on to graduate from Holmes and Coronado! And yes, I was her Art teacher my first years at Howbert. I love being part of the Howbert Family!
You may have already heard about Ms. K, she's been observing, subbing, and assisting on and off since January.
Ms. K attends Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, majoring in Art Education and Fine Arts.
As an artist, Ms. K focuses on creating portraiture using paint and charcoal.
October is Arts Month! D11 Visual & Performing Arts has partnered with the Museum at the Fine Arts Center at Colorado College to offer a special event just for District 11 families for four Saturdays in October. The family day experience is ideally suited for children ages 4 and up. This experience is free and the FAC can accommodate accessibility needs.

From the Howbert PTO...
The Walk-A-Thon is the only fundraiser we do each year & 100% of the money comes to Howbert!
In the past we have used this to:
- Fund the shade-structure on the playground
- Purchase picnic tables for student use
- Help with family nights at Howbert like Art Focus Night and Game Night
- Buy snacks for students in need
- Buy laptops, iPads, software and other technology for students
- Fund field trips and presenters for students
- Purchase art, music and PE equipment
- Host Staff and Community Luncheons
As you can see, the money we raise is well used! This week your student will be bringing a Walk-A-Thon envelope home with more information and dates. We appreciate your support of Howbert and our students. We really have the BEST community!
PTO MEETINGS
The Howbert PTO meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at 4pm. We will be meeting in-person but will also have a virtual option for those that would prefer to attend on WebEx.
We would love to see you at the meetings! It is a great way to share your thoughts, hear about happenings in the school and support the Howbert staff and students. And you don't have to commit to anything! Come to as many or as few meetings as works for you and your schedule.
