Principal Note
Scholastic Summer Reading Program
We are partnering with Scholastic to provide your child with the opportunity to select 5 books for free! Your child will be given a password (ticket for in-person and email for remote) to access a special online Scholastic bookstore. The district will pay for the books using grant money. The books will be sent to your child’s school in the last week of school so that they will have books to read during the summer. Remote learners will need to pick up books at the school location. More information about the book pick-up will be sent in May. Book selections must be made by April 5.
Why are we sending home books for the summer? Research tells us that if kids have access to books over the summer, they will not lose as many reading skills in the months they are off from school. If kids do not read over the summer, they can lose up to three months of what they learned from their last school year! Parents can help their children beat the “Summer Slide” by dedicating time during the summer for children to read by themselves, to someone else, or even by reading to them. Research also tells us when children select reading materials themselves and read for enjoyment, they receive the most gains in reading achievement.
We encourage you to discuss with your child the books that they are selecting and to support them with reading the books during the summer months. The time you spend doing this with them can make a difference to their education, and we greatly appreciate your efforts!
Illinois Science Assessment—5th Grade Students
Next week our 5th grade students will participate in the Illinois Science Assessment. This state-level standardized assessment will begin on Monday. Students will engage in three 40-50 minutes tests over a three-day span (One per day Monday-Wednesday). The assessment will be administered in an online format and is aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards for Science incorporating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which were adopted in 2014.

5 Essentials Parent Survey
The 5Essentials survey is currently open for parents. To date, we have had 87 Munhall parents submit surveys. Thank you!! I can assure parents the feedback is extremely helpful and it is examined carefully, so we can reflect on our practices and structures to continuously improve as a school. Please note, for schools to receive a Parent Report, it must meet a 20% participation threshold, and we are currently at 18%. Please help us reach that 20% mark by submitting a survey this week!
The Parent Survey will remain open through April 2, 2021. To take the survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey.
