Principal's Message/Mesaje De Director
Hola familias,
Dra. Melvin

Hello Families,
I hope you have had a good week and have been enjoying this warm weather. I know the air quality has deteriorated and I hope that conditions will improve as we approach the weekend.
We have had a busy week at school. We were all excited to participate in International Walk and Roll to School Day this past Wednesday. You will see some of the photos of this event in this newsletter and there are more in the James John PTA and PPS Facebook account. This coming week we will have our first School Site Council meeting as well as our monthly PTA meeting and our Diverse Learners' Night (virtual). I have also written some below about the recent assessment scores report distributed by PPS (with information on student performance from last school year). As we are over a month into our school year, I know you are curious about how your child is faring in school and we are preparing for our family-teacher conferences at the end of November. Teachers have begin to schedule these conferences and I suggest you reach out to your child's teacher so you can schedule this conference.
I hope you have a safe and relaxing weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week.

James John Site Council/Consejo del Sitio - First Meeting October 18 - Primer Junta- 18 de Octubre- 5pm+ Parent Representative Election/Eleccíon de representate de padres
Our first School Site Council (SSC) meeting will be next Tuesday, October 18 from 5:00-6:30pm in the school cafeteria. The meeting is open to the public and all parents are welcome to attend.
We have five parents who have volunteered to join the SSC as representative and one parent who has volunteered to be an alternate member. We need to hold an election among parents so that they can formally be appointed as members. We ask that you complete this ballot (as a Google Form) to vote. https://forms.gle/kSJQ9xSj5eANQcZt8
As you will see, we have five candidates for five positions and one candidate for the alternate position, so the vote is straightforward. The ballot also contains statements from each parent about their reasons for joining the School Site Council.
The agenda topics for our first meeting will be to review the purpose of the School Site Council, review and discuss our school achievement data from the Oregon state test last school year and to discuss and review our School Improvement Plan. There will also be a public comment period where council members or other members of the community can make comments on any school related topics. For more information on School Site Councils, please read the PPS School Site Council Handbook at this link: https://bit.ly/PPS-SSC
Again, the meeting will begin @ 5pm in the school cafeteria. A light dinner, childcare and Spanish interpretation will be provided.

Parents of 4th and 5th grade students should have received a letter from PPS in the last few weeks regarding testing results for your children from last school year. The report shows scores from the Oregon Statewide Assessment (OSAS) taken last spring and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment taken three times last year. It also shows assessment results in English for students who are English Language Learners. If you have questions about these results or would like to discuss these results, please reach out to your child's teacher. We know that students have faced many challenges in their learning during these last two years of school during the pandemic. In general we know our students are not in the place where they should be academically and we are committed to help students make great growth this year now that school has returned to normal.
