PCHS PARENT eNews
August 29, 2017
What a great start to the school year! Students and staff had a great day building relationships and getting familiar with Platte County High School. One of the highlights of the day for me was getting to meet the class of 2021 for the first time. It was the smoothest start to the school year I have experienced at PCHS. Looking forward to many more days building relationships with all 1213 members of the Pirate Nation and their families. Pirate Pride!
*Please keep an eye out for these PCHS Parent eNews newsletters as this will be our primary way for communicating with parents. PCHS Parent eNews will be sent to parents and students twice per month.

Professional Learning Community Time Designed to Improve Student Achievement; First PLC Early Release - August 30
On Wednesday, August 30, students will be released two hours early for Platte County School District's first Professional Learning Community (PLC) day of the 2017-18 school year. PLC days are designed to establish sustained and uninterrupted time for educators to work together and collaborate. Collaboration is an essential ingredient for continuous school improvement and staff development. Both of these are directly related to student achievement. This time allows educators to examine and respond to the four basic fundamental questions of a Professional Learning Community:
- What is it we want students to learn?
- How will we know when each student has achieved the learning?
- How will we respond when a student is not learning?
- How will we respond when we know a child has mastered the learning?
Parents are encouraged to opt-in for text notification PLC reminders by texting "YES" to 67587 (standard text messaging fees apply). All PLC early release days are also listed on the district calendar.
For more information on PCR-3's PLC, visit: https://www.plattecountyschooldistrict.com/PLC.
Flexible Personalized Learning (FPL) - What is It?
PCHS's Flexible Personalized Learning (FPL) system is designed to provide a flexible learning environment to meet the needs of individual learners. A school’s schedule is a powerful tool that can be used to facilitate collaboration, enhance individualized instruction, and improve student learning. While this system was first labeled FPL when PCHS piloted a flexible schedule and personalized learning opportunities for approximately 125 sophomores and juniors last year, elements of flexible personalized learning exist in every classroom from PreK to 12 grade in Platte County School District. This year we have 250 students enrolled in FPL courses. Last year we offered 10 different courses, and this year we have 26 FPL courses.
The goal of this learning system is for students to have a personalized learning experience where they blend their interests and abilities with state and district curriculum standards, and, with the help of their teachers, drive their own learning. At PCHS, this correlates into skills such as self-directed learning strategies, self-advocacy skills, time and resource management, and effective collaboration and communication.
Students that are participating in PCHS's Flexible Personalized Learning schedule have courses that are broken into various modules of large group instruction, small group instruction, and independent learning time.
These students attend FPL courses in the Paxton Center, but Paxton Center is also the location for other traditional schedule courses and co-taught courses at PCHS. For more information about PCHS's Flexible Personalized Learning system, click here.
We will be hosting FPL visits on October 19 and 20 for interested parents.
If you are interested in visiting the FPL, please complete the form linked here.
