4th and 5th Grade SIP
Our 5th Grade SIP Class celebrated “Dia de los Muertos” last week by making altars in remembrance of a deceased person or pet. The altars housed items that represent memories of a deceased loved one or pet. Students shared short stories, some chose to present important people who have passed on like Walt Disney and Jackie Robinson.
Dia de los Muertos is celebrated throughout Mexico and the Southwestern states from November 1st through November 2nd. It coincides with the Christian All Souls and All Saints Day. Families visit the graves of their deceased relatives and decorate them with flowers (chrysanthemums and marigolds), followed by a picnic where they share stories about their deceased loved ones. Special food items like “Day of the Dead” bread and sugar skulls are included in the meals.
Thank you 5th Grade and Mrs. Reyes’ 4th grade class for stopping by to listen to my students make their presentations. It was great sharing this tradition with others.

Student Council
Parents,
This year we are accepting box tops all year long. In the fall semester, they can be turned in to your child's teacher with your child's name and the teacher's name throughout the semester. The top five students in each grade level will get to attend breakfast with Santa. We will collect box tops again in the spring semester, and the top five students in each grade level will get to attend a popsicle party outside on the playground.
In addition to turning in box tops the old fashion way, you can now also download the app to have your earnings count toward your student in each of these competitions. When you download the app and create an account, be sure to select Pine Forest Elementary in Humble, Tx to ensure your box tops go towards our school as there are multiple Pine Forest Elementary schools.
Each time you shop, open your app and take a picture of your receipt to submit, and it will show you how much you have earned for PFE. At the end of each semester by the due dates for the competition be sure to screenshot your app and send the photo in an email to pedward@humbleisd.net to have your earnings go toward your student. In the email please be sure to include your student's name, teacher's name, and their grade. We can also split them evenly among all of your children if that info is provided.
To participate in earning box tops, be sure that all paper box tops and emailed screenshots are turned in by December 6th, 2019 to be in the running for breakfast with Santa and by May 8th to be in the running for the popsicle party.
Thanks,
Payton Edwards & Jennifer Howard

Viral Gastroenteritis or The Stomach Flu
I have seen several students this past week with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. There is no specific medical treatment for stomach flu. Antibiotics aren’t effective against viruses so treatment initially consists of self-care measures. The most important goal is to replace lost fluids and salts.
Per district policy, please keep your child home until they are 24 hours of vomiting and fever free without medication to decrease the spread of the virus to other children.
Here are some tips to help you get your child well and back to school as quickly as possible:
Help your child rehydrate. Give your child an oral rehydration solution, available at pharmacies without a prescription. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about how to use it. Don't give your child plain water — in children with gastroenteritis, water isn't absorbed well and won't adequately replace lost electrolytes. Avoid giving your child apple juice for rehydration — it can make diarrhea worse.
Get your child back to a normal diet slowly. Gradually introduce bland, easy-to-digest foods, such as toast, rice, bananas, and potatoes.
Avoid certain foods. Don't give your child dairy products or sugary foods, such as ice cream, sodas, and candy. These can make diarrhea worse.
Make sure your child gets plenty of rest.
Avoid giving your child over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medications, unless advised by your doctor. They can make it harder for your child's body to eliminate the virus.
Counselor Corner
Next week, Nov 13, is World Kindness Day. We will be celebrating this day on campus by giving students the opportunity to sign the No Place for Hate Pledge and by wearing a shirt with a positive or kind message on it.
No Place for Hate is an organization that promotes unity among all. The pledge states that students who sign it agree to help stop hate/bullying when they see it and that they are going to be a positive and kind person to all.
Please have your students wear a positive message and encourage them to sign the No Place for Hate Pledge on November 13.
Thank you,
Mrs. Emmite
Canned Food Drive
Starting November 4th and going through November 21st, PFE is partnering up with HAAM to collect non-perishable food items to be donated to families in need. You can send your donations with your students and have them drop them off in the brown boxes near the front office. Thank you for helping families as our holiday season begins.
