Ms. Lindsay's KDG Class Recap

February 9th, 2014

Our Lesson

Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac + Hachnasat Orchim

Yesterday morning's lesson was centered around a very important Jewish value - Hachnasat Orchim - inviting guests into your home and making them feel welcome and comfortable. We learned about Abraham and how he would keep his tent open to those needing food and shelter and what a mitzvah this was. We had a great discussion about the effects of the snow/ice a few weeks ago and how many people performed a similar mitzvah by helping strangers in need.

We read Sarah Laughs, which introduced Abraham's wife Sarah. She and Abraham were told that God would bless them with as many descendants as stars in the sky. Sarah laughed (because she thought she was surely too old to have a child), but soon after she and Abraham were visited by angels who said she would have a child, she became pregnant and would go on to named her son Isaac, which means "laughter."

Our Hebrew letter was Mem, and we talked about how it's the first letter of the Hebrew word Mezuzah. We walked around the synagogue and pointed out where we found mezuzot on doorposts, and we'll learn more about them on Feb 23rd!

Our Special of the Day

In Library, Ms. Dottie read two books to us: The Purim Surprise (just in time for Purim, which is right around the corner!) and The Shabbat Puppy. After that, everyone was allowed to check out books, so please enjoy reading them and send them back in on the 23rd.

As a reminder, as part of the mitzvah reading program, students are encouraged to read and submit short reviews for at least 6 books throughout the year. Once they reach that 6 book mark, they're also invited to a pizza party at the end of the year to celebrate this accomplishment. Your children are allowed to check out two books at a time (as long as you don't have any books already checked out), so they can reach this goal very quickly!

Reminder: No Sunday School Feb. 16th

We'll see you on the 23rd!
