Weekly Wellness Tips brought to you by: Hexter 4 Wellness Students!
My name is Niya, this is my first finished hexter at your school. And I've noticed some things in my own life that are probably similar to your own that I'd like to give a little advice on. Half my friends are high school dropouts, at one point before I came to this school I was too. I understand how draining and how exhausting school is, believe me. I really really do. I also understand you may have your own issues at home or in your personal life that school just tops it off with more stress. I understand that concept more than I'd like to admit, as do most people our age. The point is, with all that being said please fight. Yes, fight. Fight for your education and that diploma. Life on your own outside with no money, no education, and no stability will change you. I promise you that. It is extremely difficult to get a job that you can even live off, and pay your bills WITHOUT a high school diploma. Especially during this time.
Not only that, once you train your mind that school is not jail, but a tool to get you to where you want to be in life. The assignments, the essays, the homework, and everything else school has us do, will get easier. And actually that reminds me, Mental Health goes a long long way with this. You should focus on working with that before you even try to do school. The majority of people will fail with a negative mind. Yes I know many people disagree with me on this. Right? They like to say “school is most important”. But not see the person that's so clearly struggling just to function. And they still expect you to turn in those 6 missing assignments. I get it, some of your teachers won’t understand that, hey your parents probably don’t either. But I promise you there are people in your community that do. There are people in your community that understand the importance of mental health. There are people ready to help you fight.
And I will too. - Niya

Dear RLA Students,
Did you know that ovulation is the time a person is most likely to get pregnant but could get pregnant ANY time during their menstrual cycle? As we go through our cycle every month there are separate phases we go through, not just the bleeding phase. It is easy to think that is the only phase there even is during the month since it is the most prominent to us.
It is important to be aware of your body, you only get one body, so it is also important to take care of it. The more you know about your body, the easier it is to know when something is not right and to address the issue. The first phase is your period, it starts when you start to bleed and ends when you stop bleeding as well. It consists of shedding of blood and endometrium. This phase can last up to 8 days (for ‘normal’ cycles). Up next is the follicular phase, this phase in particular overlaps during the bleeding phase and carries out until ovulation. During this time, your brain sends a signal to your ovaries to get an egg ready to be released. Another shorter phase between when your period ends and ovulation starts is called the proliferative phase, in which the uterus builds up a thick layer for the egg that is about to be released. The next phase is the ovulation phase, an egg gets released from the ovary and into the fallopian tubes (where fertilization usually occurs). This happens about 13-15 days (about 2 weeks) before the start of the next period.
That is only the first half, the next half consists of two more phases. The luteal phase & the secretory phase. The luteal phase starts from ovulation and ends when the next period starts. The sac containing the egg releases estrogen and progesterone. You can experience premenstrual 2 cycle symptoms due to the hormonal changes. As for the secretory phase, just like the luteal phase it overlaps with the ovulation phase and carries out until the start of the next period. Chemicals get released, depending on if the egg gets fertilized the chemicals will help the egg attach to the uterus or help break down and shed if the egg was not fertilized. Once this cycle ends, the menstruation starts all over again. Amidst of all the changes going on you can still get pregnant anytime. Especially during the ovulation phase since that is when the egg is most ready to be fertilized. You can use apps to help keep track of your distinct phases since your body is unique. As well as tracking your symptoms. So, when you are ready to get pregnant you know when you are more likely to be fertile. Or the opposite, to avoid pregnancies.

I bet you never heard of Hedy Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr is best known as an actress during the 30's and 40's but also was an engineering wizard!! She invented a remote- controlled communications system for the US Military which serves as the basis for today's communication technology. If not for her, we probably wouldn't have WiFi!!!!
- Gio Peña, Science
Vaccines are the name of the game. They work, they are safe, and if we want to protect our loved ones, we (and they) need to get one! Are there some people who should not get vaccinated? Yes, but they are few and it is even more important that healthy people, who can get vaccinated, do so, because we create protection for them through our immunity!
How do vaccines work? What are phase 1, phase 2, and phase 3 in vaccine trails? Why do people feel pain and/or get ill when they get a vaccine? Why do I get a fever, runny nose, or body aches when I get sick? Is the COVID vaccine safe? All of these things will get addressed in this week's The Science Behind COVID
