Bristol Weekly Staff News - 8/30/18
“Students now spend hours a day interacting with texts, tweets, and social media. At the very time when newer standards demand that students think and read texts more deeply and carefully, your students come to you with less practice doing so… They have been trained to swipe as soon as they get bored.”
John Scudder in “Making History Relevant for the Social Media Generation” in

1. Tips for Relationships with Students
"As you begin this school year, keep three major educational 'truths' consistent in your practice. First, every student in class is your responsibility, even those not drawn to your teaching--yet! Winning over some students isn't easy, but they are your students and your professional opportunity. Second, your relationship with one student does affect your relationship with all students. That means how you treat a difficult student can and will affect your relationship with other students. Third, peers relate to peers before they relate to a teacher. Why? Because students know what you do to one student, you can do to them". ---The Master Teacher Vol. 50

3. Getting to Know Your Students
In the first of these two Cult of Pedagogy articles, Jennifer Gonzalez describes her growing frustration with a particular seventh-grade boy. His squirrelly behavior was getting on her nerves, and she responded with reprimands and lunch detention. But then the guidance counselor mentioned that the boy’s family was homeless and had been living in a shelter for the last two months. “At that moment,” says Gonzalez, “I realized I didn’t really know my students at all.” After shifting her approach with this boy, she decided to be much more systematic about building relationships with her students at the beginning of each school year.
4. From the Office
- PICTURE DAY: Tuesday from 7:30am-8:10am we will be taking staff pictures in the gym foyer.
- Safety Minute: If you have ideas for how we can better keep our school safe, take a minute and submit you thought/ideas here: https://goo.gl/forms/9RqUfBckEGlLLmQY2
- Primary Book Room Update:
The book room has been updated and cleaned out. Here are a few reminders:
Find books organized in the same way by level and in alphabetical order.
The fiction and non-fiction are now mixed together. This will hopefully streamline the organization and make the room easier to manage.
Check out will remain the same for the time being with you taking the books you need and returning them to the spot where you got them. Please leave the cardboard place card in the box so that you know where to return the books.
Please try to keep the room tidy and picked up. If you are not sure where the books go, let Joyce know. Please do not store or discard unwanted books in this room. We would like to grow this space so there is a plan for those empty shelves!
OASIS books are placed on the shelves in front of the table and are for OASIS tutor’s sole use. Please refrain from leaving any books or supplies on the table or top of the shelving as this space is used by the OASIS tutors with students.
Next steps for the bookroom will be updated boxes and labels. There is also a search for a parent to volunteer to maintain and shelve books for you. We are also hoping to buy updated books eventually as well. Hopefully, the space will be easier to use and make your literacy lessons easier!
