Why I Teach - Coach Joanna Farriss
Current Position: Athletic Director, Coach and Health/PE Teacher at Toisnot MS
Total Years Teaching: 14 years
First Teaching Position and Where: Middle Creek ES in Apex, NC (Wake County) teaching Physical Education.
College/s Attended: East Carolina University for both my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees - Pirate Nation...Argggggg!
Why I Love Wilson County Schools: I love Wilson County Schools because this is where I fell in love with teaching again. I left education for a short period of time to pursue another career that I actually really enjoyed, but I felt a strong calling to come back to education and specifically to middle school. I came back and fell in love with my school and my students. Every single day, I truly leave feeling like I made a difference!
Favorite Quote: "A coach will impact more people in one year than the average person will in an entire lifetime." - Billy Graham
Other Interesting Facts about Me: I am from Delway, a little town in the southern part of Sampson County. I am married to a high school football coach/weight lifting teacher, so athletics and education surround me. I am a lake fanatic and love to spend every spare moment at the lake on the water. I enjoy all water sports, especially wake surfing and slalom skiing but am just as content going for a ride on the boat and enjoying the sunshine. I also love camping with family and friends to enjoy a brief time away from the hustle and bustle of life.
Why I Teach: I am blessed to not only be a teacher, but also a coach and athletic director. My students know that I care about them just like they were my own children, and they jokingly argue over who is my favorite - some even call me "mama." I am blessed to have little to no discipline problems in my classroom and I believe that is a result of the relationships and mutual respect that I have built between us. I chose this amazing career path because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. I didn't realize that difference could be as simple as telling them every day that I love them, giving them a hug, smiling at them, saying good morning or just being a constant, positive presence in their lives. Little did I know that the biggest difference being made was actually the difference they make by being a part of my life and I am a better teacher and person because of it.
Meals Available to Children Ages 1-18
Shout Out! to members of our School Nutrition and Transportation Departments who started serving meals to students across Wilson County on Wed., March 18. Families with children ages 1-18 can pick up a meal that will consist of a lunch for that day and breakfast for the next morning at locations across the county. The child does not need to be present, and the meal is at no cost to the family. This service will continue Monday-Friday while schools are closed through May 15, 2020. Please refer to the attachments to view the schedule.
