Hello Bowman Families,
TONIGHT! Please join us for the PTA Welcome Back Family Potluck (bring a dish to share with ingredients listed) Picnic 5:30-7:30pm. PTA Board Members will be on hand to answer any questions, so look out for the membership table.
Bring a blanket or chairs and perhaps your frisbee or ball.
In order to generate the least amount of waste, we’d like to ask that you bring your own reusable plates, utensils and water bottles. If you can’t fit that into your busy Friday evening, don’t worry, we’ll have some compostable items on-hand for you to use. No need to bring disposable plates or utensils.
We could use your help with set-up, waste duty and clean-up, if you have some time to spare, please sign-up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0c4daca928a57-bowman.
Classroom Time with Corduck:
This week, I happened to stop by a 2nd grade classroom where students were working together in small groups using isosceles triangles to build shapes. The children were given “rules” to follow and each group recorded their shape by tracing the triangles on a large piece of paper to represent their shape discoveries. Later, students met on the rug and the teacher held up each groups work. The children evaluated the new shapes discussing whether or not they met the set criteria. Each time, students needed to justify their thinking by explaining to their peers why or why not they thought a shape followed the “rules”. Listening to students share their thinking aloud is one way teachers identify misconceptions children have.
Dismantling Racism Curriculum - Sharing the Work
As we conclude our third week of school, homeroom teachers, in conjunction with their “buddy” teacher have taught the first lesson of the Bowman created Dismantling Racism (and other “cisms”) curriculum. Additionally, on Wednesday, Ms. Glick hosted her assistant principal colleagues from other Lexington schools. Volunteer teachers from our Dismantling Racism Leadership Team (DRLT) presented to the group and shared information about the lessons. In two weeks, the Administrative Council Team, under the direction of Superintendent Hackett will visit and hear a similar presentation. Our talented teachers did a wonderful job sharing their experiences and evolution of the work that began several years ago. As our year unfolds, we will share more information with you.
