Dear FMS Families,

Welcome back to school! It was a great first week, and if our students were anything like our staff, everyone slept well this weekend!

Our staff will provide an EXPLO and grade level newsletter each week. The office will share a little each week to start and as needed, but will strive to share a monthly newsletter so you don't get too much information. Of course, our website and social media sites also are updated daily.

Have an amazing weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Grading at FMS

Looking at the Standards

Grading at FMS is a little different this year than in the past. We are in a three year roll out of standards based grading. Last year, our PE teachers piloted this in all grade levels. This year all of our EXPLO teachers and 6th grade will be reporting by standards. This is similar to what was done in elementary school. Seventh and eighth graders will have the same system of grading as used last year, which is traditional grades, with standards being reported in the grade card. (Next year, we will add seventh grade to SBG (standards based grading) and then the next year add eighth grade.)

Why standards based grades? This helps us to hone in on the actual skill/objective that needs support or enrichment. Instead of knowing that your child has a B in math, you can see the specific skills that are not at mastery.

I will be sharing information as we go through the year, but the video below does a nice job giving a general explanation of SBG. It was made for teachers, but as a parent, I also feel like I get a nice overview. Our students also will begin tracking all grades in an electronic leadership/data binder. Grades will be updated in the computer every three weeks.

Students will also have an area that will be in their leadership binder on college and career readiness. Even though they have a few years before they graduate, we have revamped "behavior" skills to help them understand that these are the things that will help them be successful beyond FMS. These are such skills as organization, timeliness, tone of voice, etc.

If you have any questions at all, I am happy to answer them.

The House System

What is a house?

At FMS we are set up into grade levels and we also have houses. A little like Harry Potter. The main purpose is another system of support for our students. We have house days every couple months throughout the year. Each house day has purpose and goals. You can check out a little more about our houses in the link below.
