"Love First, Last, & Always"

Happy New Year and the very warmest of welcomes back! We are so excited to continue our journey with you!

With a new year comes fresh perspectives and new goals. Are you starting 2020 with new intentions? Have you decided to improve your health and fitness? Re-examine stressors in your life? Tackle a financial goal? Get organized? These are all valuable goals, and it is so important to make ourselves a priority and practice self-care.

But have you considered improving your faith life and strengthening your relationship with God? Often, myself included, we save this type of goal for Lent. My challenge for you is to consider making a faith resolution this year. Perhaps explore scripture, attend mass more regularly, volunteer, read a daily devotional (I can recommend!), or become more involved at your parish or our school. What fits your faith journey?

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

This is a wonderful passage to reflect on as we step into a new year. It serves as a reminder that, even if we fall short on our resolutions, we can never mess up God’s plan for our lives. Whatever we may face on our journey, we can move fearlessly forward with the knowledge that God has a bright, beautiful plan for us. All God asks is that we give our lives to Him, and He will take what we offer and make it into something meaningful. May you and your family be blessed with a healthy, happy and holy 2020!

Message from Elk Island Catholic Schools

Dear Parents and Staff:

Parents and Staff of EICS students are invited to take part in a Blanket Exercise to be held at Central Learning Services (310 Broadview Road) in Sherwood Park on Wednesday, January 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Blanket Exercise is an active participation learning activity based on the major themes and findings of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. For further information, please view this KAIROS Blanket Exercise video.

Participants are asked to bring a blanket that can be placed on the floor and stepped on for this activity.

Please RSVP by Monday, January 13 by filling out this linked Google Form.

We will also have Eva Stang join us at this event. Eva, a Métis Culture and Knowledge Keeper, has been working with EICS this year, supporting the continued growth in staff and administrator knowledge of Indigenous perspectives.

If you have any questions, please email Crystal Cholin, Learning Services Consultant (crystalc@eics.ab.ca).
