Mr. D's SE Skills Guidance Updates
I hope everyone had an awesome week! This past Monday I had the opportunity to work with all grade levels at Gates Mills! Here is what the kids worked on. . .
Kindergarten: In Kindergarten, I began working with the students on Feelings. During this lesson, we took some time to discuss different types of feelings a person can have (happy, sad, mad, etc.). We took some time looking at pictures of different people as well as answer 3 questions; Who is in the picture? What feeling is that person having? and What clues are being given to us to know that feeling? It was a great opportunity for the kids to explore different feelings, what clues to look for to know what feeling the person is having, and discuss that ALL people, no matter who you are, has feelings!
Grade 1: In first grade, I worked with the students discussing Teamwork. We took time to define the word teamwork, and go over four important rules that will help the students be a good teammate in any situation. The students then did a fun activity that allowed for them to work in pairs and use good teamwork skills to discover what interests they had in common with their partner!
Grades 2, 3 and 4: In these three grade levels, we took time talking about and revisiting the topics of Kindness and Bullying. With October being Bullying Awareness Month, the staff and I value this time in being able to work with our students in this area. The students and I took time to discuss what it means to Get Along, Show Kindness to Others, and began discussing Bullying and how to identify it from other school behaviors. Next time we meet, we will continue those conversations and the kids will do Role Plays to practice!
Grade 5: The fifth grade and I spent Monday’s guidance time and one hour on Wednesday beginning a very special project for Gates Mills Elementary. Mrs. Bender, Ms. McCullough and myself have tasked the fifth grade class with being our Gates Mills Anti-Bullying Committee for the school year! Their first initiative is going to be creating and coordinating an all-school assembly that will be taking place on October 29th, the first day of our Red Ribbon Week. During this assembly, we will be celebrating our new Anti-Bullying Pledge as well as a few other initiatives we will be starting for the building. The fifth grade class did a wonderful job on both days working collaboratively with each other in groups to begin creating the necessary pieces for this assembly. More info on this project will be coming out in the weeks ahead!
If you ever have questions about one of my lessons, please feel free to email me at cdimarino@mayfieldschools.org or call me at (440) 995-7427.
Halloween
Halloween is rapidly approaching. Our plans for Wednesday, October 31st, are:
Grades K-5 will have a regular instructional day until 1:30pm when all students will be able to dress in costumes and prepare for the Halloween Parade in the gym.
Dressing in costume is voluntary. Students in grades K-5 wishing to dress in costume must do the following:
Bring costume to school in a bag.
Have costumes which will fit over school clothes.
Require no parent assistance to dress.
Get dressed in a reasonably short amount of time in the classroom.
Face masks are permitted but for safety reasons you may not want your child to wear one.
NO TOY WEAPONS of any kind will be permitted including knives, pitchforks, swords, guns, etc.
Our Parade of Costumes will begin promptly at 1:45pm in the gym starting with grade K and followed by each of the other grade levels. Room parties will begin at approximately 2pm. The PTC will again be providing snacks for the Halloween classroom parties. If you are unsure of the ingredients of this snack for your child, please provide a special snack for your child that day. DUE TO DISTRICT POLICY, NO EXTRA FOOD OR CANDY IS PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM. If you wish to put together goodie bags, you must not include candy in the bags. Other suggestions are stickers, pencils, erasers, etc. Any extra food or candy will be returned home.
Photographs at School Events
While it is permissible to take photographs of your own children at school events, it is not acceptable to photograph other children without parent/guardian consent. We ask that all parents/guardians refrain from taking pictures at school events which may include other children.
Should the school event be one where it may be difficult not to include other students, such as a concert, play or athletic event, we ask that no pictures be emailed, texted, posted to social media and/or online networking media, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, Skype, blogs, Instagram, without the expressed written consent of all students' parents/guardians in the photograph.
