Bulldog Bulletin

March 1, 2019

Dear Bulldog Families,

The beginning of the calendar year is packed with days and months typically designated to celebrate different groups of people. February is Black History Month and March is Indiana Disability Awareness Month as well as Women’s History Month. At New Britton, we use literature, science, and social studies, coupled with Indiana standards, as springboards to incorporate great work and advancements done by a variety of cultures, genders, and groups of people. There are so many wonderful books in our library and the Fishers (Hamilton East) Public Library that expose readers to the amazing diversity that creates our community and world. The Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability and the City of Fishers will host a month-long celebration to bring awareness to what life is like for those with physical and intellectual disabilities. There following link contains a calendar of events:

The New Britton PTO is also presenting Everybody Counts lessons in each class the week of March 11. This program is designed to teach children about various differences and disabilities that people of all ages may have and how they overcome obstacles associated with these differences. The main goal is to foster a better understanding of and acceptance of others. The following topics will be presented:

· Kindergarten - general introduction of similarities and differences

· 1st grade - visual impairments

· 2nd grade - hearing impairments

· 3rd grade - learning impairments

· 4th grade - physical impairments

Students will be involved in a variety of activities regarding these topics. All information is presented in developmentally appropriate manner, emphasizing strategies people use to overcome obstacles and acceptance of others.

There is A LOT to celebrate at New Britton. Our construction team is putting the finishing touches on Phase 3 of our renovation, and kindergarten teachers and Mrs. Myers will be moving into their new classrooms this weekend. We would like to thank our Bulldog PTO for once again providing snacks and lunch for everyone involved. We are also celebrating the work our school corporation has done for English Language Learners. HSE is being considered for an English As a New Language (ENL), Title III Distinguished School District Award. New Britton has been selected to host the Indiana Department of Education English Learning (EL) and Migrant Education Team visit for HSE on Tuesday, March 5th – what an honor! The school visit is the final phase of the selection process and will consist of classroom visits, conversation with a student panel, and teacher and administrator interviews.

As spring approaches, New Britton continues to be a hub of wonder and learning! Inquiry is definitely “in the air.” Have you heard that several classes are working on ways they can help New Britton and our larger community reduce the trash we are creating? Or how about the Gaga Pit plans that Mrs. Buening’s class has researched and designed? If you have been in the building lately, have you seen how our collaboration spaces are being used? Did you know that Mr. Temple and Ms. Street’s classes are working on student blogs? These learning examples are just a snapshot of the happenings at New Britton. Hopefully your student is sharing more specifics about his/her learning excitement.

Speaking of excitement…did you know that tomorrow is Dr. Seuss’s (Theodor Geisel) birthday? First grade celebrated by listening to Green Eggs and Ham and they even got to taste some. I challenge you to find your favorite Dr. Seuss book this weekend to read with your child! I would love for you to share, via Twitter, a picture of a reading moment of celebration – be sure to include @NBEBulldogs #ReadAcrossAmerica

As always, thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a great weekend!

Marker Recycling

Do you have markers that are worn out?

Would you like to help the environment and repurpose the markers instead of throwing them away?

You can help by bringing your worn out markers (regular, dry erase, even highlighters) to the art room and placing them in the Crayola ColorCycle container. This wonderful program offers an opportunity to

  1. Rid your home of all the used up markers hiding in junk drawers and old backpacks
  2. Teach students about the opportunity to repurpose everyday items
  3. Encourage families to consider ways we can explore other eco-friendly practices

Thank you Mrs. Smith for helping New Britton continue on our path to be an Eco-Cool School!

to allow teachers to participate in additional training and education.

  • Please be at your child's bus stop ready to receive your child 20 minutes earlier than their regular arrival time each Monday.
  • Car riders will need to be picked up at 3:20.

Car Riders

The easiest and most efficient way for your children to get to and from school is the district provided transportation. Our busing system is set in place to transport all NBE students safely and efficiently.

If your student needs to be a car rider more than occasionally and you have not yet received a car tag, please email Michelle at mayres@hse.k12.in.us with your name, your student's name and your 4 digit FastLane number to get your car tag. Please hang the car tag from your rear view mirror each day to help expedite the pick up process.

Thank you to all families that have been consistently using the car tags for pick up. It seems to have helped speed up the entire process!

Media Center Volunteers needed

The PTO would love your help in the Media Center. A volunteer is needed each morning from 9-10 and another sometime in the afternoon. Volunteers check in books and shelve them. Check out this signup for available slots! http://signup.com/go/XpHWqZZ
