CC Student of the Month
Abigail Mendoza reflects on her time at Mt. Sac as she gets ready to transfer this fall!
What do you like most about being at Mt. Sac? You see lots of familiar faces. You can ask people for help. I went to the honors center and they are so welcoming!
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced? Time management. For example, having your phone next to you is so distracting. I also got a job and I was too tired to study. I took too many back to back classes. Don’t take two sciences classes on the same day with only a 15 minute break.
What have you learned? In high school you think you’re so smart, but then you go to Mt. Sac you go to your sciences classes and everything is so in depth. It taught me that I’m smart, but I really needed to step it up if I was going to pass these classes. You can’t slack off, even for one day.
Are you a different person than when you started? Yeah, I’ve changed. I’ve learned from my mistakes. I need to become more responsible. Now that I’m taking classes related to my major, it’s gotten me more excited about my classes.
What motivated you to go to college? My parents. They’re always working hard. Also, my brothers look up to me so I have to show them it’s possible to do what you want to do.
If you could give advice to other community college students, what would it be? When it comes to choosing your classes, get the general ed out of the way. If you’re going to get a job, start managing your time right away, don’t wait. You have to study. If you don’t have time to study, you won’t pass the quizzes and you think 5 percent is not a lot, but it is. You have to focus. Use the bus because gas is just too expensive! Save your financial aid money! Learn to budget and save.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Due to the mercy and love of God, I wouldn't be here in this point in my life where I know I can do everything to reach my goals and it is with Him that anything is possible. :)
