Penguin Press News
The Week of March 19th
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear Penguin Families,
Spring is almost here and we are already preparing for the 2018-2019 school year. Please let our data manager, Elana Murray, know if your family will not be returning next school year (rising 1st - 5th grade families). She can be contacted at emurray3@wcpss.net
The staffs of Laurel Park, Salem Elementary, and Salem Middle are teaming up to ensure that our collective community works together to provide students with a strong K-8 experience. In fact, next Thursday's Early Release Day will be our first session of collaborative meetings focused on the middle school transition.
This fall, our three schools will begin working on building equity throughout our school communities, digging deeper into our systems and structures in order to provide the best learning environment for all students. We are very excited about our current and future work together. I will be sure to update our families on our progress!
Thank you to the wonderful families who helped paint our bus area hallway this weekend. The walls are beautiful and our students were delighted to arrive this morning to the newly brightened hallway. Your time is truly appreciated!
Please join me for Coffee with the Principal, sponsored by our wonderful PTA, on Saturday, April 14th at 8:45 AM in our Media Center. I am looking forward to getting to chat with you all soon!
Kind Regards,
Mrs. Raleigh Bame
Lufkin Road Middle School Open House for Rising 6th
We will be having a New Student Open House at Lufkin Road Middle School on Thursday, April 19th at 6pm. This will be an opportunity for parents and students to ask questions and tour the school prior to the start of the 2018-2019 school year. Please pass this information on to any families who will be joining us at Lufkin next year, and direct them to our school's website for more information.
Counselors' Corner
School counselors in WCPSS help students gain skills to be prepared to reach their full potential and lead productive lives in a complex and changing world. As elementary counselors at Laurel Park, we do the following:
Classroom Lessons: Elementary counselors teach lessons on topics such as making friends, decision making, study skills, and bullying prevention.
Small Groups: Counselors may see small groups of 4-6 students in their office to discuss topics such as being new to a school, friendship, emotional regulation, self-esteem & academic achievement.
Individual Counseling: Counselors can work with students individually for short-term counseling needs. If your child needs more support, your counselor can help you find the resources that you need.
Consultations: Counselors also work with parents & teachers to support students' learning in academic & social-emotional skills.
Laurel Park's school counselors are Caren MacEntee (Tracks 1 & 2) and Ashley Waddell (Tracks 3 & 4). They may be reached by contacting the front office, 919-290-2333, or emailing cmacentee@wcpss.net or awaddell@wcpss.net.
