This Week @ Riverside
Home of the Rams!
Hello Riverside,
That was quick. Quarter Two and the First Semester are in the books. It's hard to believe we are already passing the midpoint in our school year. So much so, that we will begin the scheduling process for the 20120-2021 School year soon (See below for more info).

New Club Alert: Monday the 27th Mock Trial Club is having an interest meeting. Listen to morning announcements for more information.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
As the School Counseling Staff is preparing to focus on course registration for the
2020-2021 school year, we would like to take a moment to explain the process of what will be
happening over the next semester and how we can work together to help your student make the best decisions possible.
While this is an exciting time and many students look forward to exploring options for next
year’s classes, some are more ready than others. We want to help increase every student’s
knowledge of what is available so they are confident going into the summer and prepared for the
next year.
The process will start with teacher recommendations in core subjects, then students will choose electives, counselors will meet with every individual student, parents/guardians will be informed of planned course requests, and students will have until June 1 to finalize their decisions.
Here is a timeline of what will be occurring over the next few months:
· January 22 Students will receive information in Advisory about the course selection process
· January 23 Elective/AP/DE Fair will be held during Advisory, in which students will choose 3
· sessions to attend and learn about particular courses of interest to them
· January 24 Teacher recommendations for Math/Science/English/History/World Language will appear in Student/ParentVue. During Advisory, students will complete a time commitment exercise to understand how much time they are expected to devote to each course and how they can manage their daily schedules. They will also be instructed on choosing their electives.
· January 27 Counselors will begin meeting with individual students through Study Halls.
o Current 9th graders, January 27-February 4
o Current 10th graders, February 5-14
o Current 11th graders, February 18-28
o *Counselors will arrange to meet with students attending The Academies and do nothave a study hall.
January 29 Curriculum Fair Night, at Riverside High School, for parents/guardians to visit with faculty and counselors
· 6:30-7:15pm Rising 9th grade Parent/Guardian presentation in Auditorium
· 6:30-7:15pm NVCC Dual Enrollment presentation in Library
· 7:00-8:30pm Faculty and Counselors available in Cafeteria to share information
*Snow date February 5
February 10-11 Scheduling for Rising 9th graders at Belmont Ridge MS during Resource blocks
February 19 Deadline for current 9th-11th grade students to apply to programs at Advanced AET or Monroe Advanced Technical Academy
Mid-March Course request verification letters will be sent to parents/guardians. We plan to
send these letters electronically and request ‘Permission Click’ for approval. If upon
reviewing your student’s course requests you would like to discuss changes, you can
contact your student’s school counselor.
June 1 Last day to request course request changes for 2020-21 school year
· Last day to submit Early Release request forms
· Last day to submit all requirements for NVCC Dual Enrollment Courses; students will be placed in the Academic level if requirements are not met by this date.
Other items to keep in mind…
● Please visit our Riverside HS School Counseling website for further information related to
scheduling. You will find samples of forms we use, a list of course offerings, and the LCPS
Program of Studies.
● The Program of Studies is a great resource to review course descriptions as well as
graduation requirements. As of this date, only the 2019-2020 edition is available. The
2020-2021 Program of Studies is expected to be posted soon.
● Teacher recommendations are provided for core subjects by the current teachers, and will be a key factor in determining placement. If a student requests a course other than what has
been recommended by a teacher, a discussion with the school counselor will be required,
and we strongly encourage you to discuss the recommendation with the teacher if requesting
a course of a higher level (requesting Honors but recommended for Academic). Teachers
may also amend recommendations later in the year based on student performance.
● Do you know about AP Potential? The CollegeBoard has developed a tool for predicting the
likelihood of student success in Advanced Placement courses based on the student’s
PSAT/SAT score. If your student has taken any PSAT or SAT, you can access the online
score report in CollegeBoard and click on the tab at the top labeled AP Potential.
● Through the end of February, school counselors will be meeting with every individual
student in grades 9, 10, and 11, in addition to supporting other needs. If further discussion is
needed to make a final decision on course selections after the verification letter has been
received in mid-March, please contact your school counselor.
● June 1, 2020 will be the last day to request changes to courses for the 2020-2021 school
year. It is also the last day to submit Early Release requests and NVCC Dual Enrollment
requirements.
We look forward to collaborating with you and your student during the 2020-2021 course
selection process, and ensuring her/his needs are supported in pursuit of academic and career goals.

Director of School Counseling

This spring our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, is conducting a school climate and school safety survey of students and staff. The purpose of this survey is to measure school discipline, student support, student engagement, and safety conditions in each school.
This information will be used to guide our School Improvement Plan and educational practices that produce a safe and orderly school environment.
I am writing to provide you with information on the student survey. The survey will be completed online using computers at school. The survey does not ask for your student’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your student answered the survey). Parents will not have access to their student’s survey answers. There is a copy of the survey available at school for your review.
The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them, and how they feel about attending school. They will also be asked what kinds of teasing and bullying they may have observed at school and whether they have been bullied themselves.
All students in your son’s or daughter’s grade level will be eligible to participate in the survey. In some schools, only a random sample of students will be selected and in other schools all students will be asked to participate. The survey is voluntary and your student can decide not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your student, or the school if you do not participate.
If you do not wish for your student to participate, please notify the school office by contacting Dr. Tripp Di Nicola, Riverside High School Assistant Principal, at 703-554-8900 or via a signed parent letter delivered to Dr. Di Nicola at Riverside High School (19019 Upper Belmont Place; Leesburg, VA; 20176) by February 1, 2020.
Your student will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your student.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of school climate.
