“The Mayas”

The Mayas are one of the most advanced, ancient civilizations in Mesoamerica. They excelled in agriculture, pottery, hieroglyphic writing, calendar-making, mathematics, astronomy, and much more. Dr. Brown will present her long-time research on this culture and explain how Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) to the Earth, is used in Mayan field research.

The Society sponsors field trips each fall and spring. A field trip for October or early November is in the works, but plans have not been finalized. When they are, members will be notified by email.


Only dues-paying members may participate in HSH field trips.


Have you seen the Society's Helotes T-Shirts yet? The shirts feature a cattle drive image from an oil painting by the late Warren Hunter (1904-1993), a Texan who lived in Grey Forest for many years. The image is either on the front or back of the T-shirt, depending on the style.
